Michelle Pfeiffer has had only limited screen time in her role as Janet van Dyne in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she will be back again in next year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. As the original Wasp, Pfeiffer’s character was trapped in the Quantum Realm during events of the first Ant-Man movie and only seen in flashbacks – played then by Hayley Lovitt – and was saved by Hank Pym during Ant-Man and the Wasp. It seems that working on the Marvel sequel was a daunting task, with frequent changes to the script during filming making it challenging for the actress.

While there are many secrets in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the fact that the franchise’s overarching narrative is constantly evolving is not one of them. Many of the upcoming movies in the MCU have their own writers, but have also seen the writers of other films dropping in to see through certain storylines and character development consistently. While speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Pfeiffer explained how numerous changes to the script took its toll on her when she worked on Ant-Man and the Wasp.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“[Marvel Studios is] very mysterious, and they’re very secretive, of course, with their storylines. It’s a little hard because I met with [director] Peyton [Reed], and I knew a little bit about the character, but there was no script. You have to commit without actually having read anything. It wouldn’t have mattered because it all changes anyway. You don’t really know what you’re getting into, and then you get a script right before you start shooting, and then it changes every day. And then you shoot the movie, and you wrap, and then it changes again.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is Currently Filming in Atlanta

While Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania started filming at The Volume last year, on location shooting has only kicked off earlier this year, with set images of Paul Rudd making their way onto the internet last month. So far, there isn’t a lot known about the plot of the movie that will seemingly round out Phase Four of the MCU next summer, but we do know that as well as Rudd and Pfeiffer, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas will also be back as Hope van Dyne/The Wasp and Hank Pym respectively, and the movie will see Jonathan Majors starring as a full-blown version of Kang the Conqueror.

Although there is a lot of story to be told before then, there are many fans eager to see the arrival of Kang in the MCU after he was teased with the appearance of Majors as “He Who Remains” in the Disney+ series Loki. “The character is different so you move a different way; my psychology has shifted because of the character. He’s just a different guy,” Majors previously said about his character. “[My Loki character] He Who Remains is not in Ant-Man. It’s Kang.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania arrives in theaters on Jul. 28, 2023.
