Mike Flanagan has a talent for creating great stories that get you engaged and also scare you half to death. If you don’t recognize Flanagan from his name, you might know him from his works such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Hush, Gerald’s Game, or the limited series, Midnight Mass. Clearly, Flanagan has a bias toward the horror genre, and we thank him for it, with his movies and series becoming successful and considered to be cult classics. Flanagan has a great way of reaching his audience through scares, as well as creating emotional moments that might surprise you, and deep plot lines that branch from jump scares to tearful confessions. He often keeps his cast close to his chest as he uses actors and actresses he’s familiar with, such as Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas, and more.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The limited Netflix series Midnight Mass, was released in 2021, and even though it ended with a solid seven episodes, it’s still talked about to this day. The series follows a small seaside town that begrudgingly welcomes back townsman Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) after he spent four years in prison for killing a woman in a drunk driving accident. At the same time as his arrival, a new priest has come to the island, who is set on revitalizing the town’s faith, but is quickly put under the microscope as strange things start to happen throughout the small community. The show plays heavily into religious themes, the affiliation with the church, and supernatural creatures, keeping the plot fresh and interesting throughout the episodes. Even though Midnight Mass won’t be getting any new episodes or a second season, here’s where you may have seen the cast before.

Kate Siegel

     Netflix

Kate Siegel plays Erin Greene, the childhood sweetheart of Riley, who is now a schoolteacher in their hometown. Siegel has starred in several of her husband’s (Flanagan) works, such as The Haunting of Bly Manor, where she played Viola; The Haunting of Hill House, where she dominated the role of Theodora Crain, as well as Maddie in the thriller-horror film Hush. Siegel was also a screenwriter for Hush, working closely with Flanagan to get it out and onto the big screen. In the upcoming future, she will be starring in a series titled The Fall of the House of Usher, created by Mike Flanagan.

Zach Gilford

Zach Gilford plays Riley Flynn, who returns to Crockett Island after spending four years in prison for killing a woman while driving under the influence. Gilford is arguably best known for his role as Matt Saracen in the hit show Friday Night Lights, appearing in 62 episodes. You might also know him for his role as Danny Warren in The Family or as Ben Walker in L.A.’s Finest. Gilford was also in a handful of episodes of Good Girls and as Jason Hyde in The Midnight Club. Along with Siegel, he will be starring in The Fall of the House of Usher sometime in the near future.

Rahul Kohli

Rahul Kohli stars as Sheriff Hassan, who’s openly Muslim in a very Catholic town, making it hard to fit in with its citizens. Kohli is known for his role as Ravi Chakrabarti in iZombie, as well as The Haunting of Bly Manor, where he played the character of Owen. Kohli also appeared in an episode of The Midnight Club and voiced Scarecrow in the animated series Harley Quinn. Following closely in the footsteps of his colleagues, you will also be seeing him in The Fall of the House of Usher.

Hamish Linklater

Hamish Linklater plays Father Paul Hill, the new priest who arrives at Crockett Island looking to revamp the views of his congregation, as he replaces Monsignor Pruitt for a short while. You might know Linklater from the show Legion, where he plays the role of Clark Debussy, or from his role in The Stand, as Dr. Jim Ellis. He was in Unicorn Store with Brie Larson as Gary, and The Big Short, where he played the character of Porter Collins. You may be surprised to learn that he won’t be in The Fall of the House of Usher, but rather in a film called The Nickel Boys; the release date of which has yet to be announced.

Henry Thomas

     Paramount Pictures

Henry Thomas stars as Ed Flynn, the father of Riley, who finds it difficult to have his son back home after what he did. Henry Thomas, like Siegel, has also been in a handful of Flanagan’s works, such as The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Haunting of Hill House. Thomas appeared in a few episodes of Stargirl as Chuck, as well as a single episode of The Midnight Club as Freedom Jack. If you aren’t familiar with any of those titles, you might just know him as Elliot from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Samantha Sloyan

Samantha Sloyan plays Bev Keane, who’s an intense member of the church and slightly overbearing. Sloyan played Shasta in The Midnight Club as well as Leigh Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, making her part of the Flanagan Universe. She also was in the film Hush with co-star Siegel, but is often remembered for her role as Dr. Penelope Blake in Grey’s Anatomy, simply because she killed one of the most beloved doctors in the series.

Annabeth Gish

Annabeth Gish plays the character of Dr. Sarah Gunning, the doctor for the entire town, as well as a close friend to Erin. Gish is best known for her roles in Mystic Pizza and The Haunting of Hill House, where she played Kat and Mrs. Dudley. She was in 26 episodes of The X-Files as Monica Reyes, and will be starring in The Fall of the House of Usher as well.

Robert Longstreet

     Signifigant Productions

Robert Longstreet plays Joe Collie, the town drunk with a lot of baggage. Longstreet has a unique and recognizable voice, making him memorable in the list of movies he’s appeared in. He played Lonnie Elam in Halloween Kills, as well as Leslie Carlyle in Judas and the Black Messiah. He was in two episodes of The Midnight Club, and appeared in Sorry to Bother You as Anderson. For upcoming projects, he will also be featured in The Fall of the House of Usher.
