Sad news has come in as veteran actor Mike Hagerty has died. The news was announced on Instagram by Bridget Everett, one of Hagerty’s co-stars who plays his daughter on the HBO series Somebody Somewhere. Everett did not specify a cause of death, only announcing that Hagerty had passed away in Los Angeles. He was 67 years old.
“With great sadness, the family of Michael G. Hagerty announced his death yesterday in Los Angeles,” Everett writes on the post. “A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life. Mike, a devoted husband, is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, his sister Mary Ann Hagerty, her wife Kathleen O’Rourke, and their daughter Meg. He will be sorely missed.”

Everett also shared a follow-up post including some photos of herself and the Somebody Somewhere team with Hagerty. Everett writes, “I loved Mike the instant i met him. He was so special. Warm, funny, never met a stranger. We are devastated he has passed. Mike was adored by the entire cast and crew of Somebody Somewhere. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.”

Several celebrities commented on the post to express condolences, including Chelsea Handler, Katie Couric, and Mo Collins. Filmmaker Paul Feig also wrote, “Oh no! This is devastating. He was so brilliant. I’m so sorry, Bridget.”
Mike Hagerty Had Been on Television for Decades

Mike Hagerty had been working professionally as an actor since the 1980s. He had most recently appeared in Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett, which premiered on HBO in January and was renewed for a second season the following month. Somebody Somewhere turned out to be Hagerty’s final role. He made an impression with his involvement in the acclaimed series, as it currently stands with a perfect 100% score at Rotten Tomatoes. Hagerty played the family patriarch in the series, which follows a middle-aged woman dealing with a midlife crisis after the death of her sister.
He also had a run on the popular sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Captain McGinley with other recent TV roles including The Goldbergs, Shameless, and Chicago Party Aunt. One of Hagerty’s most memorable roles was as Mr. Treeger on Friends. The actor also had recurring roles on the TV shows The Building, Lucky Louie, and The George Carlin Show.
His other TV work includes Seinfeld, Married… with Children, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Wonder Years, Ally McBeal, The Michael Richards Show, Community, and Grey’s Anatomy. Hagerty had also appeared in a variety of feature films including Overboard, Dick Tracy, Wayne’s World, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Helicopter Mom.
Along with Hagerty’s wife, Mary Kathryn, the actor’s survivors include his sister, Mary Ann Hagerty, along with her wife, Kathleen O’Rourke, and their daughter, Meg. At this time, our condolences go out to Hagerty’s family and friends. May he rest in peace as his memory lives on.
