Spider-Man’s fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse animated film. The film introduces a whole new cast of spider-variants, including Miles Morales, played by Shameik Moore; Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, played by Hailee Steinfeld, Spider-Woman played by Issa Rae; and Spider-Punk, played by Daniel Kaluuya.
The new still gives fans a glimpse of Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen. The two are seen seated close to one another. However, they appear to be sitting upside down, and the cityscape in the distance is inverted. This could hint at the movie’s plot, which seems to involve different universes. The still from the movie was posted on Twitter with the caption, “A new view from across the #SpiderVerse coming 12.13.” The new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on Dec. 13th.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has plenty of speculation about what the sequel will look like, with one such possibility being a more prominent role for Spider-Man 2099. Writer Phil Lord revealed that Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, will be the one to take charge of the Spider-Variants as they attempt to fix the madness of the multiverse.
More details of his role are still unknown, but fans hypothesize that his presence could introduce new narrative possibilities, such as time travel and alternate universes. It’s possible he could help Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy find a way back to their home universes or even make a case for a shared universe where heroes from different worlds can come together to fight evil. Whatever direction they choose to take the story, it’s sure to be an exciting ride.
“Miguel O’Hara is the leader of a band of fighters that are trying to clean up the consequences of the collider explosion at the end of the first movie. And as you can imagine, it’s really hard to lead a bunch of people who have never been led [laughs].”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters on June 2, 2023.
