The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premiered in 2017 to critical acclaim. The series follows 1950s Jewish-American housewife and mother Midge Maisel as she discovers her husband’s affair. This propels her to pursue a career in standup comedy, something her husband had attempted– not very successfully– and very much a man’s world at the time. She is arrested for obscenity and is bailed out by café employee Susie Meyerson (Alex Borstein), who is impressed by her standup and goes on to be her manager. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel stars Brosnahan, Borstein, Michael Zegen, Marin Hinkle, Tony Shalhoub, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron, and Luke Kirby. The fifth season is currently in production in New York.

Since 2016, Ventimiglia has portrayed the Pearson family patriarch on NBC’s This is Us. The popular show is an Emmy Award-Winning drama and the recipient of The Screen Actor’s Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama in 2018 and 2019. The show will come to a close tomorrow night after six seasons. Ventimiglia is set to appear, opposite Catherine Haena Kim, in the upcoming ABC drama pilot The Company You Keep, based on the Korean format of My Fellow Citizens.

The Milo Ventimiglia and Amy Sherman-Palladino Connection

This is not the first time that Ventimiglia and Sherman-Palladino have worked together. Ventimiglia appeared as Jess Mariano in the cult-classic Gilmore Girls, Luke Danes’ bad-boy nephew and love interest of Rory Gilmore, and reprised his role for the 2016 continuation Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

During a separate TVLine interview, the actor said this about his relationship with Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino, who has served as Executive Producer, Director, and Writer for Gilmore Girls, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel:

Ventimiglia is not the only Gilmore Girls alumni that have appeared on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Other stars include Liza Weil, Emily Bergl, Brian Tarantina, Christopher Eigeman, Scott Cohen, Kelly Bishop and, most notably, Borstein, who has won 2 consecutive Emmys for her portrayal as Midge’s manager, Susie.

“Once Gilmore wrapped, we never stopped talking. I’ve kept them close to my world and they’ve kept me close to theirs for a very long time. So, when Amy called and said, ‘Hey, would you come [on the show]?’ I was like, ‘Absolutely — whatever you guys need.’ So, it [was] just great. They’re such good people. And it’s always nice as an actor to work with creative writers that care so much about the work and the outcome and the process."
