During its run on NBC, the American version of The Office had achieved great success, garnering a slew of prestigious awards in addition to high viewership and widespread acclaim. While the show ended in 2013 following nine seasons, it has maintaind its popularity over the past decade thanks in part to its availability on streaming services. It’s a show that many fans continuously rewatch on its current home at Peacock, but even with how popular The Office remains on streaming, there are some who feel the show wouldn’t survive if it were to have premiered in 2022, given how much times have changed.

You can count Mindy Kaling, a former writer and star of the show, as someone who acknowledges that The Office was a product of its time that probably wouldn’t fly quite so well with viewers today. She spoke about the subject on a recent edition of Good Morning America (per EW), admitting that she’s spoken with other members of the show’s creative team about how “tastes have changed.” Kaling says the series would be much more problematic these days as “what offends people” had also changed quite a bit over the past decade. As Kaling explains:
Perhaps having a reputation as a show that pushes the envelope is what helps keep The Office so fun to watch time and time again for fans, as Kaling also goes on to theorize.
Mindy Kaling Says Kelly Would Be ‘Canceled’ in Real Life
NBC
There’s no indication that The Office will get a revival at this time, but Kaling does have an idea as to what happened with her character, Kelly Kapoor. She imagines Kelly getting further involved with social media to the point of becoming a popular influencer. However, she’d have a swift fall from grace when she gets “canceled” quickly thereafter, suggesting that nearly everyone else from The Office would have something similar happen with them as well.
