For several years, Hollywood has shifted from an endless cash-grab of remakes and reboots to delivering a host of nostalgic legacy sequels. In general, this has led to a string of box office hits including Ghostbusters: Afterlife and currently Top Gun: Maverick, which has further stoked the need for the return of more original casts in new sequels to 80s and 90s movies. It looks like one such movie that is inching closer to a new belated sequel is Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, the 1997 cult classic starring Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino. While both stars have spoken about a new movie being in early development, Sorvino recently appeared on TODAY and seemed to give an encouraging update.

While it seems that there is still a lot of work to be done, the hardest part is always getting an idea together for such a sequel and then getting a studio to green light the project. Though Sorvino’s update was not announcing the imminent arrival of another Romy and Michele reunion, it gave the strong indication that something is definitely on the cards. She said:
She wasn’t the only one talking about it either, as co-star Kudrow appeared the same day on SiriusXM and happened to mention that original writer Robin Schiff is “thinking about it and coming up with something.” She added, “Isn’t it thrilling?”
“We’re getting closer. Something might be in the works. There’s nothing official to report, but I can unofficially hint that we’re closer than we’ve ever been to getting something to happen.”
It certainly sounds like both stars expect a sequel to be made at some point in the not too distant future, and they both seem to have unofficially signed onto whatever ideas Schiff comes up with to bring Romy and Michele to a new audience.
A Romy and Michele Sequel Has Been in the Cards for Some Time
While the film has already had a prequel TV series, Romy and Michele: In The Beginning, which starred Katherine Heigl and Alexandra Breckenridge in the respective titular roles, there have been many calls for a sequel with the original cast. In February this year, Kudrow and Sorvino appeared at the SAG Awards to present the Outstanding Ensemble in A Comedy Series Award. Dressed in pink and blue like their characters in the movie, Kudrow and Sorvino shared a throwback to the film’s dialogue. Kudrow asked, “Do you think that this is the cutest anyone has ever looked at an awards show?” Sorvino replied, “I just realized this, we’re wearing great ensembles while at the same time presenting great ensembles.”
Everyone knows that sometimes it only takes one moment to add the spark needed to ignite interest in full-blown reunions. Sorvino previously said that she believes there is something enduring about the original movie, which mainly comes from the “nerd friendship” the two characters have. While it seems there may still be a little wait yet, a full Romy and Michele reunion seems to be on the right track.
