The Very Relatable Struggles
20th Television
Every single episode of Modern Family starts with the camera focusing on one of the households with the members rushing around and trying to figure something out. Interestingly, this might be a very common phenomenon in households. The episode then goes on to focus on some struggles or issues the families seem to be entangled with. From addressing childhood traumas to trying to clear up miscommunications, these struggles seem to be very simple, yet important and addressable issues. In a way, it makes the viewer feel not so alone, as the show makes it seem like these problems are resolvable and common in many households. The way in which the characters break the fourth wall drags the viewer into the storyline, in turn, making them a part of it. Additionally, it seems as if the viewer is made the “reliable mediator”, which makes them feel much smarter than the characters.
Positive Messages and Character Developments
The way in which every single episode ends with the families resolving the issues is definitely heart-warming. However, more importantly, each episode carries an important message. More often than not, the messages focus on attempting to bring light to important issues. For example, we see some episodes trying to focus on Jay’s (Ed O’Neill) toxic masculinity, which seemed to have had a negative effect on his relationship with his son, Mitchell (Tyler Ferguson). Nonetheless, the way in which the characters develop while overcoming these flaws definitely brings hope to the viewer. It also sends out the positive message on how people can change once they start working on their flaws.
The Humor is Light-hearted
With many shows and films invoking dark humor these days, it is not easy to find a show that focuses on light humor and actually nails it. Fortunately, Modern Family is one show that seems to have achieved the art of light humor. With dad jokes and the little bickering of the characters, it definitely brings the laughter. The addition of Gloria, played by Sofia Vergara, is undeniably one of the biggest positive points of the show. Her humor is quite unique and unmatchable. Of course, there are instances where it seems as if the show is making a mockery of her Latin nature. However, this headstrong character goes on to address this, as she states that it is infuriating to be made fun of for her mispronunciation. Thus, it can be stated that while the humor is brilliant, the creators have also avoided bringing in controversies.
The UnusualFamily = A Literal Representation of a Modern Family
If there’s one theme that strikes out in this series, it is the idea of an unusual family. With a step-grandmother who is absolutely gorgeous and young, gay parents trying their best at parenting, and a family with a weird set of parents who seem to be the complete opposite of one another, everything about these families seems extraordinary. However, if one were to analyze closely, one might be able to find a Phil or a Cameron or a Claire in their own family. Moreover, the very diverse nature of these families, as well as the unique personalities of the characters brings a whole world of chaotic fun to the screen.

The Bonds Give Us Hope
Throughout the series, the viewer is able to go through the journey of how these characters develop their bonds. They understand one another and learn to work on their flaws while accepting their differences. This is definitely a comforting element that gives hope to the viewer. It also illustrates how relationships grow strong over time. For example, almost every single character has a unique relationship with every other character. It is absolutely beautiful. Modern Family is one series that you can watch again and again as it wraps you up like a comforting blanket.
