Moon Knight will soon be the latest Disney+ series in an impressive line of Marvel shows that have already premiered over a little more than a year. This time, there is a bit of a change from the old guard. Moon Knight will be the first Phase 4 MCU show on Disney+ that isn’t being led by previously established characters. Wanda, Vision, Falcon, Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, and others were all previously well-known due to the blockbuster Marvel films that preceded in earlier MCU phases. Moon Knight will start a trend of new MCU stars, which will lead to the all-new series’ of Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, Armor Wars, and Ironheart coming up soon. Without an established MCU backstory, however, it’s not easy for casual fans to know much about these heroes until the premiere of their shows. In the case of Moon Knight, the show is set to premiere on March 30th on Disney+.

Actor Oscar Isaac will be starring as the leading character of the new show, portraying Marc Spector, a former United States Marine, CIA agent, and mercenary with a dissociative identity disorder. This is best known to many as a multiple personality disorder. For example, in the first full trailer of the show, Marc is referred to as Steven Grant, an alternative identity Moon Knight uses in the comics. Marc Spector (aka Moon Knight) lives a difficult life, often not being able to separate his dreams from reality, and vice versa. When he is severely wounded in Sudan, he comes in contact with a statue of the Egyptian Moon God, Khonshu, that revives him (saving his life) and turns him into Moon Knight in the process. From that point forward, he must save and protect innocent people. There are four major aspects of the Moon God’s nature that Moon Knight exhibits: the traveler, the pathfinder, the embracer, and the defender of those who travel at night. All that aside, the question leading up to the release of the series is: what’s Moon Knight’s connection to the other characters already in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Where Does Moon Knight Fit in the MCU Timeline?

     Marvel Studios

The character of Marc Spector (Moon Knight) was born in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. While Marvel is subject to change plans in the past, it’s thought that Moon Knight will likely be set in modern times, perhaps in 2022. This would mean he should be able to interact with any other Phase 4 Marvel character at some point, should the studio choose for him to do so. These interactions are something we will probably see occur over the upcoming next few years as additional interconnected MCU stories unfold. Despite Moon Knight’s powers coming from an ancient statue, that should not have any bearing on the time period in which Moon Knight himself lives in during the Disney+ show.

Who Does Moon Knight Align Himself with in the Comics?

While often a loner, Moon Knight beats up whoever is deserving because he believes he’s the avatar of the Egyptian god of vengeance. In a way, this helps him make amends with his past as a mercenary, which resulted in him sometimes killing others. Although there is no connection between the two (and there won’t be because they are characters of rival companies), Moon Knight is most commonly compared to Batman, another beloved antihero without superpowers who has enough disposable income to be able to fight crime with. Over the course of more than four decades (and nine volumes of Marvel comic books), Moon Knight’s been part of numerous groups and interacted with practically everyone, including The Avengers, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Dr. Strange, the X-Men, The Punisher, Deadpool, Daredevil, and The Fantastic Four. He’s already appeared on the following Marvel Comics teams: West Coast Avengers, Secret Avengers, Marvel Knights, Heroes for Hire, and most notably, the Midnight Sons. This likely means he could easily fit into whatever future plans the MCU has in their future storylines and stay true to the groundwork the comics have already set for the character.

There Isn’t a Direct Connection Between The Characters – Yet

While none of this has currently been established in the MCU, Marvel looks to be setting the early groundwork for their telling of a much larger story, as they’ve previously done in the past. It’s expected that after the new Moon Knight Disney+ series ends, he will become a part of future MCU projects as well — otherwise, why would they introduce the character now? — including upcoming movies. According to a Total Film exclusive, Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater stated that the eponymous character joining the Avengers “is the goal.” This would allow Moon Knight to interact with countless heroes and villains going forward. It’s currently unknown exactly what movies or shows he’d potentially be part of, outside his own upcoming origin story. However, there are already announced films like Deadpool 3, a Fantastic Four reboot, and another X-Men project he’d certainly be a good candidate to be part of.
