Spoiler Warning: Moon Knight Season One
The MCU has been knocking it out of the park for 14 years now, and even though Endgame is in the far distance of our rearview mirror, Marvel shows no signs of stopping any time soon. Even though most of the entertainment business was shut down for the better part of two years, the studio managed to only push their projects back a year and allowed the largest gap between MCU projects we’ve ever had. Luckily, fans’ patience was rewarded, and since January 2021, audiences have been gifted with ten different MCU projects (six tv shows, four movies). The most recent tv show, Moon Knight, is currently airing on Disney+, and it’s quickly becoming one of Marvel’s most experimental and popular shows to date.

Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac as the titular character, has Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). The anti-hero has already begun making headlines for his heart-stopping performance as the white-caped crusader. Now, with only a couple of episodes under its belt, the show will only have a total of six when all is said and done. Not many people know a lot about Moon Knight (and most have never heard anything about him before the show), but Marvel did a perfect job of introducing the character.
Moon Knight Was Revealed at the Last Second
Marvel Studios
Talk about build-up with a complete pay-off. Again, not many viewers had the slightest clue who Moon Knight was, what his powers were, or anything about his backstory (i.e., most fans are going into the series completely blind). Therefore, with the subject matter of who Moon Knight is as a character, it made perfect sense for the first episode to make audiences as utterly confused as Steven was about what was going on. It literally took until the very last second of the episode for audiences to get the chance to see Moon Knight in all his glory before the screen cut to black.

But instead of feeling let down, audiences felt blown away by how insanely powerful he is (not to mention how awesome the costume was). So, while some people might complain that the first episode took a long walk for a short drink of water by waiting until the literal last second to reveal the titular character, the shock-and-awe effect of the moment was more than worth the short-lived reveal.
Moon Knight Hasn’t Included the MCU
Again, Moon Knight has only been out for a couple of episodes, so there’s no telling where it will go by the end of the series. Nevertheless, something truly unique about the series in the first few episodes is that there haven’t been any references to the MCU. One of the staples of MCU projects is that the heroes (and villains) don’t have secret identities and are actually known public figures throughout the world… or at least, throughout the United States. Not only that, but Marvel has made a habit of leaving Easter eggs, bread crumbs, and subtle references sprinkled throughout their projects that give hints to their other shows and movies in the MCU.
However, Moon Knight is the MCU’s first show set in Europe, and not a single reference to the Avengers, Thanos, the Snap, or anything else MCU-related has been mentioned. Spider-Man: Far From Home took place after Endgame and went all across Europe, so we know the Snap has happened and affected the continent. But for some reason, Moon Knight has chosen to ignore its MCU counterparts completely. With the MCU getting as large and crowded as it is, it’s a nice change of pace, and fans are loving it.
Moon Knight Didn’t Need Much
Again, some fans did have minor complaints about waiting the entire episode to see the titular character. After all, we live in a world of instant gratification where everything we need is right at the tip of our fingers. With so many different shows on so many different streaming platforms, it’s important for the series to do everything it can to hook viewers immediately. Luckily, the MCU has garnered a reputation that will allow its audience to give them the benefit of the doubt where they’ll stick around no matter how long it takes to get what they came for. This is the case with Moon Knight – and it paid off perfectly.

Not to mention, even without showing the titular character until the final second, the show still managed to be action-packed and heart-stopping while leaving audiences confused and intrigued at the same time. Moon Knight is the MCU’s first true attempt at a psychological thriller, and they’re proving that they can make a superhero project out of any genre they want.
