Marvel’s Moon Knight has kicked off its award wins with a Creative Arts Emmy on Sunday night. The series was nominated in the Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special, as well as seven other categories, and secured the first win for Marvel Studios at the annual TV awards. Just like WandaVision, the series is one of Marvel’s offerings that has been a constant subject of speculation over whether there will be a second season, but its inclusion in the limited series category seemed to put paid to that idea when the original nominations were announced.
Moon Knight was a hit on Disney+ earlier this year, introducing Oscar Isaac’s Marc Spector in the MCU in a show that currently stands apart from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s narrative for now. The lack of connection was something that many praised in the series, and the show’s post-credit scene seemed to suggest that Moon Knight would return. However, despite several rumors, and even a tease from Issac and director Mohamed Diab, there has been no word that Moon Knight will be coming back for a second season.
Although the win is a big boost for Marvel Studios, Moon Knight’s win was its only one out of eight nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys over the weekend. The other categories the series was nominated in were Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance (F. Murray Abraham’s Khonshu), Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Outstanding Music Composition, Outstanding Sound Mixing, Outstanding Stunt Coordination, and Outstanding Stunt Performance for Limited Drama Series or Anthology.
Moon Knight Could Still Return in Another Series
Marvel Studios
While there have been several Marvel TV shows that have been nominated in the limited category, those that could have potential second seasons have always been nominated in the drama or comedy categories. Moon Knight’s win as a limited series suggests that Moon Knight season 2 will not happen, but that doesn’t mean Oscar Isaac will not be back as his troubled superhero in another series.
The first season of Moon Knight was also responsible for introducing Scarlett Scarab, played by May Calamawy, who could also be in line to headline her own Marvel spin-off series at some point, which could also include Isaac’s Marc Spector and his other personalities. This would certainly be the easiest way for Marvel to continue Spector’s story, which didn’t seem to be fully complete by the end of Moon Knight, while still keeping the show as a limited series in its own right.
Sunday’s Emmy win could be the first of many awards to come for Moon Knight, which was highly praised at the time of its release, but it could also be the start of a long run of disappointment for Marvel Studios. WandaVision provided Marvel Studios with their first Emmy win at the Creative Emmys but then failed to capitalize on the achievement and was mostly shut out of the main Emmys ceremony. Whether Moon Knight can add more accolades to its haul over the awards season is something that Marvel bosses will be keeping a keen eye on in the coming months.
