A new Morbius poster has been unveiled, letting Marvel fans know that the next installment in the Sony Spider-Man Universe will hit IMAX on April 1. Starring Academy Award winner Jared Leto as the titular character, Morbius will introduce the next member of Sony’s shared universe, a doctor who is transformed into a vampire after attempting to cure his terminal illness.

Shared to Twitter by Fandango, the Morbius IMAX poster is particularly artistic in its approach, with a silhouette of Jared Leto’s heroic doctor merging with an image of bats and a glowing visage of the cave that will change the man’s life forever.

Morbius will introduce one of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters as House of Gucci and Blade Runner 2049 star Jared Leto is transformed into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease, transforming the good doctor into a conflicted monster.

Director Daniel Espinosa is confident in his leading man, believing that Jared Leto is the only actor capable of bringing Morbius to life. “Jared Leto was the only actor that could really play the part of Morbius. That wasn’t really a choice – it was predestination,” the filmmaker said. “Jared is a beautiful actor to work with – he comes to set fully prepared, completely immersed in his character. He’s become known for his approach to his characters, but it was truly surprising to see how much emotionality he could wrest out of Dr. Michael Morbius. He has a strong dedication, beginning to end, and more than just an actor. He’s a colleague, a partner.”

Jared Leto Wants to See Morbius Meet Tom Holland’s Spider-Man on the Big Screen

     Sony Pictures Releasing

So far in Sony’s Shared Spider-Man Universe, the neighborhood web-slinger has been notably absent, with the Marvel hero instead busying himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, with each movie focusing on a different Spider-Man villain, it must surely be a matter of time before Tom Holland’s Peter Parker makes the leap from one shared universe to another.

Morbius star Jared Leto would love to see his vampire antihero and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man come face-to-face on screen, with the actor recently saying, “I’ll tell you, I would love to get in the ring with Spider-Man. I think Tom Holland is amazing, and we’d make quite a dynamic duo.”

Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Morbius’s friend who suffers from the same rare blood disease and eventually becomes the supervillain, Hunger; Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, a scientist and Morbius’s fiancée; Jared Harris as a professor and Morbius’s mentor; and Tyrese Gibson and Al Madrigal as Simon Stroud and Alberto Rodriguez, a pair of FBI agents hunting Morbius.

Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 1, 2022, following a series of delays.
