Filming is ongoing for the long, long-awaited sequel, Beverly Hills Cop 4, and Eddie Murphy has once again been spotted as Axel Foley on set. The actor and comedian slips effortlessly back into the beloved role, sporting his iconic tennis shoes and varsity jacket, with the sequel now confirmed to be titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. You can check out the latest images, which come courtesy of Daily Mail, below.
Spotted on set in Los Angeles, Murphy, can be seen dressed in the Detroit Lions jacket that Axel Foley loves so much. It’s good to see he has barely changed during the near-three decades since we last saw him. Further images find Murphy preparing to shoot a car chase sequence. One which will no doubt result in a lot of crashes and explosions as Axel stops at nothing to get his man. So, not only has his fashion sense remained the same, but so have his methods for crime fighting.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Eddie Murphy first played the role of Axel Foley way, way back in 1984. The first outing in what would become a hugely successful franchise, Beverly Hills Cop introduces audiences to Eddie Murphy as Detective Axel Foley, a reckless young cop with a penchant for cracking jokes and getting the job done. Directed by Martin Brest, Beverly Hills Cop finds Foley heading to Beverly Hills, California, to solve the murder of his best friend, teaming up with Sergeant John Taggart and Detective Billy Rosewood along the way.
The first Beverly Hills Cop was met with huge critical and commercial success and went on to spawn a franchise as well as help launch Eddie Murphy’s Hollywood career. The last audiences saw of Axel Foley was in the less well-received Beverly Hills Cop III, which debuted nearly 30 years ago. Since then, fans have waited patiently to see whether Eddie Murphy would ever revive the Axel Foley character, and after many months (and years) or rumors and false starts, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley has now been given the green light.
Eddie Murphy is Not the Only One Set to Return for Beverly Hills Cop 4
Paramount Pictures
Eddie Murphy is not the only original Beverly Hills Cop star to reprise his role after all these years. Following some speculation and concern that Foley would return to California without the help of his fellow detective pals, both Judge Reinhold and John Ashton have now been spotted on set, with the actors reprising their roles as Detective William “Billy” Rosewood and Sergeant John Taggart respectively.
Not only will Murphy, Reinhold, and Ashton all be back, but original star and Foley’s put-upon partner Paul Reiser will also return in the sequel as Detective Jeffrey Friedman.
Plot details for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley are currently being kept under wraps, but it has been revealed that Taylour Paige (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Toxic Avenger) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer, The Dark Knight Rises) will join Eddie Murphy as he once again travels to Beverly Hills where he will no doubt get himself involved in all manner of crime and conspiracy.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley does not yet have a release date but will debut on Netflix.
