Since DCU co-CEO James Gunn teased Mr. Terrific on his official Twitter account, fans have been eager to learn who the new heroic character is. The DC Universe, like MCU, has numerous superheroes, but Mr. Terrific is a legacy shared by two legends. The mantle of Mr. Terrific is passed down from Terry Sloane to Michael Holt in the same way the roles of Black Canary and Black Panther were passed down in the Arrow and Black Panther films.

Mr. Terrific may be unfamiliar to DC fans who have yet to read the comics or who only watch movies and TV shows, but he’s more than just a sidekick, as we presumed after watching Arrow. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at Mr. Terrific, one of DC’s finest superheroes, and what role he has to play in the DC Universe’s future.

The Origin of Mr. Terrific

     DC Comics

Mr. Terrific has the most distinguished history of any superhero we’ve seen thus far. While Batman, Green Arrow, The Flash, and Robin became superheroes out of spite, Mr. Terrific was born out of a genius. Terry Sloane, a self-made millionaire, is a man of many talents. After accomplishing all his life ambitions at an early age, he was left with no challenges to pursue, and he eventually developed suicidal tendencies.

He found a new purpose in life, though, after helping a woman named Wanda Wilson rescue her brother, who became entangled in a gang dispute. He soon joined the Justice Society of America and felt a sense of fulfillment every time he protected an innocent person.

The Justice Society of America was later disbanded owing to fears for the safety of their family and loved ones. During the annual meeting of Justice League, Terry Sloane’s Mr. Terrific was killed by his old nemesis, the Spirit King. The superhero’s legacy, however, did not end there, as Michael Holt inherited his place in the future.

How Did Michael Holt Become the Successor to Mr. Terrific’s Mantle?

Although Terry Sloane was the first Mr. Terrific, Michael Holt is regarded as a more prominent superhero for a variety of reasons. Holt is an equally talented individual as Sloane, with five black belts, an Olympic medal, and fourteen doctorates in various professions. After the untimely murder of his wife and unborn child, Michael Holt planned to commit suicide. Thanks to a fortuitous encounter with Spectre, The Vengeance of God, he was introduced to the mantle of Mr. Terrific.

Inspired by Terry Sloane’s life story and having many commonalities in person, he chose to take up the role of Mr. Terrific. He eventually joined the Justice Society of America and became its chairman. Mr. Terrific is a born genius, despite his lack of superpowers. If he had a Marvel Universe counterpart, he would be Tony Stark, but with a different approach to becoming a superhero.

Powers and Abilities of Mr. Terrific

Mr. Terrific may not have superhuman speed or sonic waves coming out of his mouth, but his intellect is unrivaled. He chose his power based on his gymnastic ability, combat capabilities, and understanding of advanced technology. Holt is said to have “a natural aptitude for having natural aptitudes,” which means he can easily learn any complicated skill and transform it into an ability.

T-Spheres, one of his greatest innovations, can be regarded as both terrifying and convenient equipment with a wide range of applications. It is an AI miniature device that can fly, project holographic pictures, produce laser grids, function as vision, self-destruct, generate tremendous electrical charges at alarming speeds, and even allow Holt to fly bearing his weight. In any case, he’s an all-rounder with a slew of skills and is regarded as the third-smartest man alive, second only to Lex Luthor and Batman.

Mr. Terrific’s Future Role in the DC Universe

     The CW

Mr. Terrific previously appeared in a Justice League Animated series as well as from Season 4 through Season 8 of The CW’s Arrow. Although his persona was undeveloped in the Arrowverse, the animated series paid homage to his distinct comic character. He also appeared in Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash, as well as infrequent Arrowverse crossovers. This raises another concern, especially in light of James Gunn’s recent hint of Mr. Terrific. What is Mr. Terrific’s future role in the DC Universe?

Michael Holt has been a fan favorite since he was first presented in 1997 by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake. Despite his valuable influence on the DC Universe, he remains underappreciated. The DC Universe is planning several major films for the future, such as the Justice League sequel, which will undoubtedly necessitate a figure like Mr. Terrific. Still, it would be beneficial to debut him in his own film. As a result, a film focusing on how Michael Holt became Mr. Terrific and demonstrating his capabilities would be a terrific presenter for the character that fans have long admired.

With the recent release of Black Adam, we finally saw the rise of Justice Society on the big screen. Unfortunately, it was more concerned with individual members than with the group as a whole. Fixing the JSA’s issues in the DCU may be possible with the entrance of less popular characters like Mr. Terrific. So, despite rumors concerning Mr. Terrific’s involvement in the subsequent films, it will be some time before he makes a memorable appearance in one of the main DC Universe films.
