What characteristics define a strong villain in a film? In truth, a good villain needs to stand out from the others in one key way: a spooky, manic, and blatantly malevolent chuckle.
From superhero films to science fiction, horror, and parody films, there have always been well-known cult classic villains. Because of their capacity to inspire horror and shivers, these villains’ demonic laughs have a way of sticking with listeners. Between Harry Potter’s Bellatrix and Pennywise the Clown, some evil laughs are just more recognizable and have succeeded more in giving certain movie sequences a sense of gloom and dread. To find out which famous movie villains have the most iconic evil laughs, keep on reading!

10 Emperor Palpatine (Star Wars)
20th Century Studios
Three trilogies have featured the perfect wicked chuckle of this Sith Lord. Palpatine stands in for the Empire at its most blatantly evil, and the antagonist always seems to be enjoying himself while enticing Jedi to the dark side.

Although Palpatine reaches his zenith as a raving tyrant in Revenge of the Sith, Darth Sidious’ maniacal laughter in Return of the Jedi and explosive shriek in The Rise of Skywalker is certainly befitting of a Sith Lord. Palpatine’s laughter is brought on by the sight of a wounded Yoda lying on the ground in a way that can only be characterized as psychotic.
9 Freddy Krueger
One of the most iconic things in not just horror but also film history is Freddy Krueger’s distinct chuckle in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Even though Krueger was cast in several movies over the years, he has never once lost his menacing aura (or evil laugh).
It’s still unsettling to think that someone could kill you while you sleep, as it was when the franchise first began 35 years ago. Krueger’s evil laughter, which constantly emphasizes his insanity, power, and (of course) his insane personality, is practically necessary to his character at this point.
8 Bellatrix Lestrange
Warner Bros. Pictures
Voldemort’s chuckle is certainly distinctive, but Bellatrix from the Harry Potter movies intimidates people more effectively than the Dark Lord. Bellatrix is not merely a formidable witch, but also a Death Eater who clearly enjoys causing harm and ruin.
Bellatrix delivers every cackle with such unreserved glee and arrogance that there is no question that they are sincerely felt, regardless of how outlandish the character’s laugh can be. This is a villain who takes pleasure in what she does, and Bellatrix has no problem using the power of laughter to spread that passion throughout the world.
7 Pennywise the Clown
Why are so many clowns so horrifying when they are supposed to make people laugh? No matter who plays the role of Pennywise, he has a reputation for being a clown with a particularly terrifying laugh.
The older version of Stephen King’s It had already made a fortune with Tim Curry’s expression of wicked joy, so the 2017 feature version made the decision to keep Pennywise’s trademark chuckle. Pennywise giggles in a manner that will cause the majority of people to run for the hills. We assure you that, when you watch either of the movies, the only person laughing will be the clown.
6 Joker
Warner Bros.
Laughter is a weapon in The Clown Prince of Gotham’s hands. Just take the movie Joker as an example. Those unfortunate enough to hear the Joker’s laugh are aware that they are in the company of pure evil because the monster has haunted the DC universe for decades.
While Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Mark Hamill each gave their own interpretations of the Joker’s infamous laugh, they all contributed to making the villain the most terrifying comedian in movie history. The Joker only needs to laugh to convey his point, and his point is probably an evil one.
5 Patrick Bateman
One of the craziest horror antagonists of all time is American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman. Christian Bale’s portrayal showcases his acting skills, however, it is still unclear whether Bateman actually killed his victims or if it was all in his head.
When Bateman confesses to all of his misdeeds over the phone, it really demonstrates how severely disturbed this man is, going through every feeling imaginable. Bateman changes his tone halfway through the call from being unhappy and repulsed by himself to laughing uncontrollably and saying he “just had to kill a lot of people.” Yikes…
4 Jabba the Hutt
There are only a select few evil laughs that can be clearly distinguished as belonging to a certain character. Nobody can imitate Jabba the Hutt’s loud and self-assured laughs; when someone hears that laugh, an image of a slug-like crime lord will appear in their head.
Jabba gets to steal the show for the first act of Return of the Jedi, and the villain makes the most of every opportunity. Jabba is one fearless criminal, and his evil laugh is one of the most well-known in the galactic franchise.
3 Chucky
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer / United Artists / Universal Pictures
A little bit of voodoo and the ghost of a horrible serial killer will do the trick just fine because it doesn’t take much to make any type of doll spooky. Even though Chucky is small, his viciousness knows no bounds, and Child’s Play loves to juxtapose the killer’s horrific killings with heart-stopping laughter.
Chucky maintained his devilishly sinister appearance and demeanor even as the series experimented with a lighter tone and gave the villain all the jokes. Thankfully, this doll will never change; it is the sheer embodiment of wickedness. Definitely don’t go playing with that thing!
2 Jack Torrance
In The Shining, Jack Nicholson truly sacrifices everything. As his family keeps watch over the winter-vacant Overlook Hotel, Jack Torrance is a guy seeking some quiet time. The longer the Torrance family is confined to the old hotel, the more slowly we watch Jack descend into lunacy.
The audience can best understand Jack’s madness when he enters the gold ballroom and engages in conversation with our favorite bartender, Lloyd. Naturally, Lloyd can’t be there in person. However, Jack drones on and on while speaking to Lloyd, and when he suddenly laughs hysterically at his own joke, we understand that Jack may be seriously losing it.
1 Green Goblin
Marvel Studios / Sony
In 2002’s Spider-Man, Norman Osborn’s origin story is just as important as Peter Parker’s, and only one of these characters gets to appear in a scene with a replica of themselves. In an iconic scene that begins and finishes with stern laughing, Norman completes his metamorphosis into the Green Goblin.
The impact of Osborn’s most menacing smile ever is multiplied a hundred times over by the villain’s cackling, which is nonetheless powerful enough on its own. In this single moment more than in any scenario involving the Goblin’s mask, Norman is sure to give a fright.
