A live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia is moving forward at Netflix. Last year, it was reported that a planned movie based on the manga and anime series was in development with Japanese filmmaker Shinsuke Sato (Alice in Borderland) set to direct. A new update on the project (via Variety) reveals that Netflix has acquired the project, and along with this news comes word that Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Army of the Dead) will be writing the screenplay. Legendary Entertainment’s Mary Parent and Alex Garcia are producing while Sato will also serve as an executive producer.
My Hero Academia is set in a universe with superheroes who have their own special abilities, which have been dubbed “Quirks.” Primarily, the show follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without a Quirk who still fantasizes about becoming a superhero even without one. Sensing great potential in Izuku, the powerful and popular superhero All Might takes the boy under his wing and offers to enroll him in a high school for superheroes in training.
The story has spawned a massive franchise that has already found great success before this foray into live-action with the upcoming movie adaptation. The popular anime series adaptation premiered its sixth season back in October, and there have also been multiple animated movies including My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, and My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission. It has also been expanded to stage plays, video games, and other mediums.

It’s not a big surprise to see Netflix taking on My Hero Academia, as the streamer has shown itself to see the value in adaptation popular anime shows this way. One notable example would be Cowboy Bebop, which was turned into a live-action series at Netflix after several attempts to get a live-action adaptation going. Unfortunately, the show was ended after just one season, though it doesn’t seem to have stopped the streamer from trying a hand with My Hero Academia as a live-action feature film.
Netflix is also working on a live-action series based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, with some other upcoming titles including One Piece, Sword Art Online, and Yu Yu Hakusho. A new live-action Pokemon adaptation is also in gestation at the streamer, and the second season of Alice in Borderland will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 22.
The live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia does not yet have a premiere date set at Netflix.
