A “really good” script has been written for National Treasure 3, and it will be sent to Nicolas Cage without delay, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Bruckheimer revealed that, despite the upcoming Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History leading everyone to believe that any hope for Cage’s return was dead and buried forever, National Treasure 3 is being worked on as we speak.
Released back in 2004 and directed by Jon Turteltaub with Jerry Bruckheimer producing, National Treasure introduces audiences to Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian, cryptographer, and treasure hunter. Joined by the likes of Harvey Keitel, Jon Voight, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean, Justin Bartha, and Christopher Plummer, National Treasure finds Benjamin tackling a mystery that involves the American Freemasons, the American Revolutionary War, and, of course, stealing the Declaration of Independence.
“Let’s hope we’re working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly.”

While it received mixed reviews from critics, audiences loved seeing Cage in this old-school adventure romp, which spawned a sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, in 2007. Both movies were a box office success, and many have long awaited the return of Nic Cage as the history-loving hero. Well, it sounds like that wait could soon be over at last.
Cage has previously poured a bucket of cold water over the idea of a National Treasure 3, with the actor stating that the plan is simply to move the franchise into serial format on Disney+. “No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show, so I would say probably not,” Cage said when asked if audiences will see a big screen adventure alongside National Treasure: Edge of History.
National Treasure: Edge of History Will Be a Continuation of the Movies
Disney+
While not much is known about the plot of National Treasure: Edge of History, aside from it following a new, younger cast of characters on a treasure hunt, star Lisette Alexis has since revealed that the series will be a continuation of the National Treasure movies.
“The treasure that we follow and uncovering all of the mysteries, that we have on the show — each episode kind of leads into the next,” she said. “You know, I think parts of the treasure [followed in the series] were mentioned in the second movie. I don’t know if I could say that - but the pan-American treasure was introduced then, so it’s a continuation of the original movies only twenty years later.”
One of the biggest clues that both the series and the movies are tied together is the return of both Justin Bartha, who reprises the role of computer expert and friend of Benjamin Gates, Riley Poole, and Harvey Keitel, who will once again play FBI Special Agent Peter Sadusky.
Starring Lisette Alexis, Lyndon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, National Treasure: Edge of History does not yet have a released date, but is expected to land on Disney+ in 2023.
