A positive update has come in for National Treasure 3. After Nicolas Cage starred in the 2004 original, he returned for the 2007 sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The franchise then went dormant for many years before recently getting resurrected in the form of the Disney+ series adaptation, National Treasure: Edge of History. While Cage isn’t involved with the series, it is set in the same universe as it features Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha reprising their roles.
With Disney adapting National Treasure as a TV series, does that mean National Treasure 3 is dead in the water? Not at all, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In a new chat with E! News, Bruckheimer said how Disney may have wanted to do the TV series spinoff, but that it hasn’t affected the development of National Treasure 3, which his still slowly but surely coming together. As Bruckheimer puts it:

There have been rumors and reports for years of a third National Treasure, but Nicolas Cage seemed to cast doubt on the movie happening earlier this year. In a Q&A session with fans on Reddit, the actor was asked if National Treasure 3 was happening, and he was under the impression that the film was canceled in light of Disney focusing on the Disney+ spinoff series.
“No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show, so I would say probably not,” Cage said.
Meanwhile, Bruckheimer had been more optimistic, and as we can now see, the release of the new series hasn’t hindered his plans to do the film. In August, he provided another positive update by noting that a screenplay was currently getting written for the project. He also teased that a finished script would soon be sent to Cage for approval.
“We’re working on the script right now,” Bruckheimer told ComicBook.com. “Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly.”
National Treasure: Edge of History is created by Cormac Wibberley and Marianne Wibberley. The series stars Lisette Olivera, Zuri Red, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Jake Austin Walker, Lyndon Smith, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The series premiered on Dec. 14 and will conclude its first season on Jan. 25, 2023. You can straem the show on Disney+ and you can check out a trailer below.
