Despite having one of the highest ratings of any series to ever stream on Netflix, Warrior Nun has become the latest show to bite the dust and will not be renewed for a third season. Warrior Nun has pulled in some impeccable reviews from its dedicated fan base but audience volumes have not been enough to allow the series to continue. The show only remained in the Top Ten for three weeks and did not make it higher than #5, which in terms of Netflix’s cost-vs-viewers consideration is just not good enough.

Based on the Manga novels of the same name, Warrior Nun tells the story of a 19-year-old who awakens in a morgue with a divine artefact in her back. She is enlisted into an ancient order that fights demons on Earth and very quickly attracts the attention of forced of heaven and hell who want to control her.

The show was originally conceived as a movie, but later was redeveloped as a series for Netflix. Alba Baptista both narrates and leads the series as 19 year old Ava Silva in her first English-speaking role. The first season of Warrior Nun debuted in July 2020 and mostly positive reviews. The second season followed in November 2022, and landed with even higher audience reviews that pushed the show to a 97% score. However, despite the stellar reviews, the simple truth is that not enough people tuned into the series to make a third season worthwhile for the streamer.

Will Warrior Nun Gain More Viewers After Being Canceled?

     Netflix

The second season of Warrior Nun has only been on Netflix for a month, but the decision to cancel it has seemingly been made already. The news of the show’s demise after just two seasons could end up instigating a wave of belated interest in the series, which is how many other shows have become huge cult hits over the years. However, similarly, having only two seasons and no real conclusion could well put off those who were thinking of giving the series a try.

Netflix has frequently come under fire for its continual cancelation of shows that gain really high ratings and develop a dedicated but relatively small fan base. This has been particularly true of series that fall into the Young Adult genre, as well as anything revolving around fantasy and special effects-laden shows. Some of these have included First Kill, The Babysitter’s Club, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I’m Not Okay With This and Fate: The Winx Saga.

This is something that has not gone down well with a number of Netflix subscribers who have complained on every social media platform possible about the streamer’s strategy. However, while there will always be some people disappointed when a show they have invested in is scrapped, Netflix’s recent issues with over-spending has proved a need for the streamer to make some tough decisions about which of its scripted series are returning their investment and which are not. It seems that it is this tough decision-making, rather an anything wrong with the show itself, that has seen Warrior Nun fight its last fight.
