It is a much loved Japanese tradition that has had a couple runs as an American show on Food Network. And now, per Deadline, Netflix is cooking up its own take on Iron Chef with a new show set to debut later this year called Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend.

Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend, which has already received an eight-episode order, is based on the critically acclaimed Japanese show Iron Chef from the Fuji Television Network that ran for seven seasons. In the original, a chef would enter Kitchen Stadium to challenge one of the Iron Chefs in a battle based around a secret ingredient. Both chefs would have to make a meal based on several courses and present each course to the judges who would judge the meals based on the presentation, taste, and creativity in the use of the secret ingredient.

In Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend, chefs will face a similar culinary challenge when they step into a revamped Kitchen Stadium and take on one of five Iron Chefs. As of yet, the names of the Iron Chefs have not been announced, but they are sure to be culinary legends. At the end of the season, the Challenger that fared the best will return to battle in a grand finale for the chance to be named the first ever Iron Legend.

This Is the Third American Version of Iron Chef

     Food Network

Iron Chef is an immensely powerful property with versions popping up in seemingly every country. This will mark the third time that the US has produced a version of the popular and challenging cooking competition. Iron Chef USA aired in 2001 with William Shatner as the Chairman. While it was a fun take on the property, it did not last long. However, Food Network struck gold with Iron Chef America which ran for 13 total seasons with two spinoffs, Next Iron Chef and Iron Chef Showdown.

Iron Chef America managed to capture much of the charm of the original with some larger-than-life chefs serving as the Iron Chefs. Over the course of the 13 seasons, Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, Wolfgang Puck, Cat Cora, Masaharu Morimoto, Michael Symon, Marc Forgione, Jose Garces, Geoffrey Zakarian, Alex Guarnaschelli, and Stephanie Izard served as Iron Chefs with culinary guru Alton Brown serving as the commentator. Actor Marc Dacascos acted as the Chairman with the story being that he was the nephew of the Chairman from the Japanese version. It was a ratings hit for the Food Network and is still highly watched in reruns.

No release date has been announced for Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend yet, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2022. The original Japanese version of Iron Chef is on multiple streaming services, including Peacock and PlutoTV, after a deal to bring it to streaming was made between FujiTV and FilmRise.
