The season finale climaxed with a nightmare-ish cliffhanger, setting up audiences for the continuation of the story through subsequent seasons. The news broke via Instagram directly from bo Odar’s account in a note signed by both him and his creative partner Friese with the accompanying caption “Sad, but true.” Within the note, the creators express that they would’ve loved to complete the story through a second and third season – like their previous mind-puzzling series Dark – but understand that sometimes life doesn’t turn out as planned. They thanked their fans for their support, asking them to “never forget” their mind-bending science fiction mystery.

1899 Was Meant To Unfold Over Three Seasons

Although 1899 did receive criticism over the show’s pacing, the story ramped up heading into the series finale, which left viewers with a massive plot twist and many unanswered questions. As mentioned in the creators’ cancellation announcement, the duo had the desire to finish the winding enigmatic story through two more seasons. According to the show’s creator and writer Jantje Friese, the 1899’s story was always meant to unfold this way.
“It’s structured again as a three-season mystery puzzle just like Dark,” Friese told EW in September ahead of the series premiere. “Obviously, this will only happen if enough people watch, but the way that we approached development and how season 1 is ending, you kind of want to have another one. So hopefully, ultimately, that is happening. That’s how we laid it out as a plan, and let’s see if the world agrees.”
