Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald’s action-comedy series Obliterated has found a new home on Netflix. TBS had previously given a straight-to-series order for Obliterated. It’s unclear why exactly the series was shopped to Netflix, but the move comes after the recent Warner Bros-Discovery merger, following which TBS and TNT discontinued their scripted programming. The plot synopsis for the series (via Deadline) reads:
There is currently no word on when Obliterated will premiere, but casting talks are happening right now, and the show is expected to commence production this summer. Obliterated will consist of eight 45-minute episodes. The show was announced back in 2019 when Cobra Kai was still airing on YouTube Red. The martial arts comedy was then picked up by Netflix in a partnership with Sony Pictures Television after Youtube canceled all scripted originals.
“Obliterated is a serialized action dramedy focused on an elite special forces team who is tracking a deadly terrorist network, hell bent on blowing up Las Vegas. After their raging end-of-mission party filled with alcohol and drug-fueled debauchery, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a decoy. With the clock ticking, the intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, deactivate the bomb, and save the world.”

Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are under an overall deal with Sony, and Obliterated will also be a part of it. And considering how big of a hit Cobra Kai has proven to be for Netflix, ordering another series from the same team would have been a no-brainer.
Cobra Kai Creators Also Developing an Ancient Aliens Film at Legendary
History Channel’s long-running TV series Ancient Aliens will be adapted for the big screen by the Cobra Kai team. Josh Heald will direct the film from a screenplay by Luke Ryan. Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Joh Jashni are on board as producers. Ancient Aliens is a wildly popular docu-series that mainly explores theories that extraterrestrial beings visited our planet thousands of years ago. However, the film adaptation will be quite different. THR describes the film as “a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts, confronting the theories and questions raised by the popular docuseries.”
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald have come to be known for their Karate Kid spin-off series, Cobra Kai. The show follows the 1984 film’s villain, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), as he reopens the infamous dojo, hoping to find redemption by training his bullied teenage neighbor, Miguel (Xolo Mariduena). Cobra Kai has been a smash hit for Netflix, and season 5 is already on the way. The show has brought back several characters from the original Karate Kid trilogy, like Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Martin Kove as John Kreese, Thomas Ian Griffith as Terry Silver, Elizabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Yuji Okumoto as Chosen Toguchi, and Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko.
But one character who has yet to arrive is Hillary Swank as Julie Pierce from The Next Karate Kid. Swank has stated that she is open to reprising the role, and the Cobra Kai creators have also teased her appearance in season 5. We’ll find out if that happens when Cobra Kai season 5 premieres on Netflix, which is likely to happen near Christmas. As for the show’s future, the creators have envisioned seven seasons to conclude their story, but with Obliterated filming this fall and Mariduena busy with DC’s Blue Beetle, those plans will likely be delayed.
