Lions, tigers, and bears. Oh, yes! When searching for the right blend of information and entertainment (the ever-elusive infotainment, as it were), one would be hard-pressed to find a better compromise of intellectual and scintillating than that present in the nature documentary. Sir David Attenborough has worked his way into all of our hearts, making it difficult to enjoy an ecological visage without a patronal English accent describing natural occurrences as they unfold.

However, David Attenborough has gotten older. As such, the impending gap in nature documentary content must be filled. Netflix’s Animal (2021) is one such attempt to rival the Planet Earth empire. Throughout its run, Animal has boasted, alongside a reel of almost inconceivable nature cinematography, a star-studded cast. Need proof? The octopus episode was narrated by the Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal. This legacy of famous voice talent will undoubtedly continue in future seasons.

Let’s imagine what animals might appear in Animal season three, and perhaps more importantly, who will provide a voice-over for those episodes.

Your Highness: King Shark

The recently released season two of Netflix’s Animal ended on a fascinating note. Viewers got a (no pun intended) in-depth look into the lives of everyone’s favorite subaquatic mammalian friend, the dolphin. Underwater camera technology has progressed in previously unthinkable ways over the course of recent years. As such, the opportunity arises for entire episodes of nature series focused upon our previously inaccessible underwater brethren. If season two gave us dolphins, why shouldn’t season three give us sharks? Enter the King.

Sylvester Stallone portrayed King Shark in The Suicide Squad (2021). The villain, a bipedal fish with inconceivable strength and razor teeth, unexpectedly stole the hearts of DC Cinematic Universe fans worldwide, and Stallone, an undeniably accomplished actor, would be an impressive addition to the already noteworthy lineup of celebrity voice talent on Netflix’s Animal, were the show to follow in the footsteps of the Discovery Channel and devote an episode to sharks.

The Bat-Tinson

Netflix’s Animal has already seen a superhero in the spotlight. Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), who even casual Marvel fans will recognize, narrates the second episode of Animal season two, “Birds of Prey.” Even his character, The Falcon, a superhero clad in a cutting-edge suit, would be hard-pressed to outpace some of the raptors shown in his episode.

Robert Pattinson recently gave us an impressive performance (both financially and critically) as Gotham’s protector, The Dark Knight, in The Batman (2022). If Anthony Mackie, as a character whose avian nomenclature is derived almost entirely from his winged suit, was given the opportunity to give voice to birds of prey, would not Robert Pattinson, who portrayed Batman, a legendary antihero with a genuine connection to the world’s only airborne mammal, be the perfect choice for a bat-centric episode of Animal? One can easily imagine his raspy baritone underlying a mass bat flight.

Sick of These Snakes

Much like a snake’s tongue, this pitch for season three of Netflix’s Animal is two-pronged. The hypothetical episode in question focuses on the much-maligned yet scientifically significant snake. If Animal, season three, chooses to focus an entire episode on this slithering reptile, it’s obvious who should be fingered for said episode’s voice-over responsibilities.

First, the generational talent Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Avengers, The Hateful Eight) is the most obvious pick to dub over the hissing and strangulation-induced chokes of a potential snake episode. Samuel L. Jackson was the star of the 2006 horror adventure flick Snakes on Plane. He’s also the only reason anyone had any interest in seeing that preposterously premised picture because of a now-ubiquitous outburst: a diatribe about emeffing snakes on emeffing planes.

It’s obvious, then, that Samuel L. Jackson is the exact reptile aficionado to narrate an Animal episode dedicated to snakes. No one could argue to the contrary. But is there any other celebrity out there with adequate snake-handling abilities? Yes. Ice Cube (Boyz n the Hood, Straight Outta Compton 2022 Jump Street) would make a perfect voice talent for an Animal snake episode. Of course, we are all fans of Mr. Cube’s turn in the 1997 thriller chiller Anaconda.

After several years locked inside our respective homes, no streaming content is as cathartic as the nature show. They have proven to stimulate the intellect and the senses; colors and cinematography battle for supremacy with the intricate, unscripted storylines and primal character conflicts. Netflix’s Animal has proven itself to be comfortably seated alongside an elite class of contemporary nature documentaries, and audiences can only hope that future stunning footage is paired with equally impressive voice talent.
