Spoiler Warning: Bridgerton Seasons 1-2

Since the release of its first season in December 2020, Bridgerton has emerged as a favorite among viewers. The Regency-era romance quickly became a binge-worthy series, with many rushing through entire seasons in one go. According to Deadline, the second season of the Shondaland series was watched for 251.7 million hours in the first seven days since its release. This officially broke Netflix’s record for the most viewed English-language television series. Focusing on Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), the season was also in the top ten list of 93 countries.

Given the fans’ addiction to the Regency-era show, the end of season two left fans quickly yearning for a third season, Although fans were expecting season three to take up the storyline of Benedict, the second Bridgerton son, and Sophie, in a surprise turn for fans of the novels, the official Bridgerton social media pages reported that the third season would focus on the “budding relationship between Mr. Colin Bridgerton and one Miss Penelope Featherington.”

Given the surprise twist, although viewers of the series may have somewhat seen this coming, fans had a lot to say regarding what they wanted to see in the latest season of Bridgerton. Many took to Twitter to voice their opinions.

Excitement for #Polin

While fans were justifiably somewhat saddened that the series was deviating from the order of the books, they were equally excited to see the relationship between Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) blossom. Despite it being made obvious in season one that Penelope had a crush on Colin, Colin’s relationship with Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), Colin’s overseas travels, and Penelope overhearing Colin’s claims that he would not court her threw the couple’s relationship into uncertainty. Given this and the fact that season two ended on a rather sour note for Penelope, fans are now excited to see how the relationship between Colin and Penelope may play out.

User @Mnxeu admitted their disappointment at the deviation from the order of the novels but also expressed their keenness to witness the relationship of Colin and Penelope.

Hopes for an Empowered Penelope

While fans expressed their excitement at the prospect of Penelope being the center of attention, fans have further expectations for her character. Given Penelope’s affinity for blending into the background and not having the chance to voice her thoughts and opinions and have them be accepted within the ton (except as her alter ego of Lady Whistledown), fans now want to see a stronger, more empowered Penelope. Viewers look forward to having a Penelope who stands up for herself.

Fans were also excited to see Nicola Coughlan, the actress who portrays Penelope, getting her chance in the limelight. As noted in Lady Whistledown’s society papers, Penelope Featherington has continually spent her days as a wallflower, largely overlooked by her own family and the ton. She only excelled anonymously as Lady Whisteldown. Now that Coughlan’s Penelope is finally being brought into the spotlight, fans think she is well deserved of the center stage and expressed their eagerness to see her as the main focus.

Given how season three concluded the relationship between Eloise (Claudia Jessie) and Penelope, fans are also holding onto hope that season three may bring about reconciliation between the friends. With Eloise deducing the fact that Penelope is Lady Whistledown and then confronting her regarding it, the friendship between the two friends appears to be ruined. “I wish never to see or speak to you again,” says Eloise to Penelope in the final episode of season two.

The season ends with grief and anger tarnishing the friendship of two individuals who were previously inseparable. Against the backdrop of this ending, fans are now hoping that season three will repair the relationship between the two friends.

From the thoughts expressed on Twitter, it is clear that fans have high hopes for what they want from Bridgerton season three. Only time will tell which hopes may become a reality and which will be dashed. However, the wait time is still uncertain as an official release date for season three has not yet been confirmed.
