Fighting For India in a Foreign Land

Cchild star, now famed director, Shantanu Bagchi, and experienced producer Ronnie Screwvala, who co-chaired M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, created Mission Manju. The plot follows Mr. Singh, a RAW or Research and Analysis officer from the foreign intelligence agency of India. The movie takes place before and during the real-life historic conflict of the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 where countless lives were lost and threatened because of all the various military operations, grisly air strikes, and weapons of mass destruction being waved over the heads of millions of people. Amandeep Singh, who once covertly stood idle in Pakistan, is chosen to go on the most crucial mission of his career.

Amandeep has been strongly motivated throughout his entire life to honorably right his father’s wrongful and sinful betrayal of India. With this tragic familial background spurring him to become number one in all of his RAW training, he, along with two other covert officers Aslam Usmaniya and Raman Singh, played by Sharib Hashmi and Kumud Mishra respectively, investigate Pakistan’s alleged involvement in a nuclear facility that was built right on the border between the two countries. Actors Usmaniya and Singh are great achievers in their own right, not only starring in many different Indian features but also both have their hands in directing and writing positions as well. The supporting roles that they hold in Mission Manju not only help to escalate Malhotrahas’s main character but also provide emotional backing to the film’s climactic moments which makes the overall movie feel more complete and fulfilling.

Amandeep Singh Gets Caught Between Love and War

While this mission could very well be a one-and-done type of scenario for any other agent who is coldly dedicated to the assignment that they are given, being a long-standing citizen with everyday needs has become a part of Amandeep. Going about with the alias of Tariq Ali in the new country, he falls in love at first sight with Nasreen, the blind daughter of a shopkeeper who decides to employ Amandeep early on in the film. The two quickly marry and she becomes pregnant. Making a solid appearance on a list that ranks the most influential actors on social media by Forbes India in 2021, Nasreen is played by Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna. Revealing her wide range through performing for numerous international films since 2016, Mandanna has been nominated for and won several awards during her prolific career, such as Best Actress and Best Youth Icon.

Now with both a coming child and his political objective becoming more urgent with each passing day, the balancing act between his two separate lives becomes harder and harder to keep. In the midst of worrying about his wife and unborn baby’s health, the audience watches as the field officer has to overcome the most challenging of obstacles to stop a devastating war which includes doing his best to evade officers on top of a moving train and also stealthily surveying a doomsday bunker from afar. Sidharth Malhotrahas not only naturally shows a bold temperament and a poised mannerism which are both needed for a person who holds such a profession like Amandeep Singh, but also exerts a charismatic, caring side that comes out for Nasreen, his fellow allies, and family members. The action-romance dynamic of Mission Manju brings forth an emotional conclusion that will tug at your heartstrings for surely a long while.

Even though the movie had several untimely delays that ultimately stopped a theatrical release, the production companies RSVP Movies and Guilty By Association Media LLP were not going to give up on bringing it to worldwide audiences. Both stationed in Mumbai, India, these corporations have brought forth countless other features to Netflix, the region-specific version of Disney+, and the Indian streaming platform Sony Liv.

With so many highly regarded actors, actresses, and parties that are all connected to a brilliant story that will not only put you on the edge of your seat but also make you emotional by the end of it, Mission Manju is an international Netflix release that you should check out as soon as possible.
