The series reintroduced the public to Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, the star-crossed lovers of the 1990s. The Canadian actress-model developed a loyal fan base through her print modeling work in Playboy Magazine and subsequent cinematic appearances in Baywatch, Barb Wire, and Raw Justice. Her boyfriend, Tommy Lee, achieved fame as the founding member and lead drummer of the American rock band, Mötley Crüe. The couple had a whirlwind, publicized, and publicly scrutinized relationship. Its notoriety persisted through 2022 with Hulu’s release of Pam & Tommy, a dramatized adaptation of “Pam and Tommy: The Untold Story of the World’s Most Infamous Sex Tape” by Amanda Chicago Lewis.
While Pam & Tommy received praise for Craig Gillespie’s directorial style and the performances of Lily James and Sebastian Stan, the series also drew significant criticism. The limited series follows the theft of Anderson and Lee’s illicit videotapes and the subsequent national fallout. Anderson remained radio-silent regarding the show, but many sources described her discontent, disappointment, and hurt that the traumatic story was being retold. Ironically, the show tells the story of stolen, illicit videos that were harmfully leaked without consent without the consent of Pamela Anderson, herself.

As she worked alongside award-winning documentarian Ryan White, Anderson provided an uncensored, authentic account of the life she led — both in and out of the public eye. The unique combination of unfettered access to Pamela’s story, something omitted thus far, and White’s persistence to honor Pamela’s life all come together to create a groundbreaking documentary.

Pamela, A Love Story: The Plot

Pamela, A Love Story provides a nuanced account of Anderson’s life. The official Netflix synopsis describes the documentary as “an intimate and humanizing portrait of one of the world’s most famous blonde bombshells. Pamela, a love story, follows the trajectory of Pamela Anderson’s life and career from small-town girl to international sex symbol, actress, activist, and doting mother.”
This account differs from others in two ways. First, it features never-before-seen materials. archival footage, pictures, personal accounts, and excerpts from Anderson’s journals. In addition to her willingness to be completely transparent with filmmaker Ryan White, Anderson apparently provided White with decades of archival footage, home movies, pictures, personal accounts, and her personal journals.
Second — and arguably most significant — Pamela, A Love Story is told from Pamela’s perspective. This documentary provides a platform for Anderson to tell her story. It includes everything that played out on the international stage: her relationships, career, scandals, successes, and failures. What’s more, it includes everything that was omitted from the international stage: the consequences of tabloids, what the scrutiny was like at every stage of her life, and how it all impacted Pamela as a young woman in the public eye.
Pamela, A Love Story centers Anderson as the leading, primary, and sole focal point of the story, thus differing from other accounts told through the lens of her relationships, acting, modeling, or notorious plastered-in-the-tabloid events. The documentary weaves everything together to tell the story of an iconic woman.

The upcoming feature comes from Emmy-nominated documentarian Ryan White (The Case Against 8, The Keepers, Good Night Oppy). Pamela Anderson will be featured in interviews and archival footage.

The documentary will premiere on January 31 on Netflix.
Everything Else We Know
White revealed to Vanity Fair that Anderson’s sons Brandon (26) and Dylan (24) convinced her to make the documentary.
“They adore their mother and really hate seeing her story being told by other people in a way that they don’t feel is authentic to who she is. Pamela, by nature, is an incredibly open and honest person. That’s perhaps why Pamela’s gotten burned a lot in her life, but I also think that’s what’s so lovable and infectious about her.
However, Anderson wasn’t the only one to hesitate when it came to the upcoming film. White established his career in documentary filmmaking by seeking out “stories of ordinary people reacting with the extraordinary.” His documentary subjects to date include the secretary to The Beatles, tennis star Serena Williams, two South Korean women who fell victim to an international espionage plot, the unsolved murder of nun Catherine Cesnik, two lawyers in The Case Against 8 (California’s Proposition 8), and most recently, NASA’s Opportunity and Spirit rovers. White had no experience with celebrity documentaries, and he admitted that he generally has little interest in making them.
Anderson confirmed the documentary announcement via her personal Instagram profile.
“I feel like a lot of them are about brand management or selling a product, whatever that may be. And Pamela’s the opposite of that. From the very beginning, she was like, ‘You can ask me anything. I will talk about anything. I will be nothing but honest with you about it all.”
