Resident Evil, the iconic apocalyptic video game series by Capcom, is officially going to be hitting our (small) screens on Netflix with a brand-new storyline. On August 27, 2020, the streaming giant officially announced that the live-action Resident Evil series was in active development. The show is the brainchild of Andrew Dabb, the co-showrunner and executive producer of CBS’ hit TV series Supernatural.

In an official statement for the show, Dabb went on to say:

If the news of this show’s development sounds familiar to you, Deadline had initially reported the story of this show back in January 2019. However, this is the first official confirmation that this video game will be adapted into a TV series. Of course, the question on everyone’s mind is what the storyline will look like for this show; will it be similar to the video game or something entirely different? Moreover, what can we expect from this upcoming Netflix series? Let’s dive right into it.

Resident Evil: The Plot

The video game adapted into the TV series will follow the two Wesker children’s adventures and be set across two time periods. Netflix confirmed the following story arcs in an official announcement:

Albert Wesker, their father and the perennial villain in the Resident Evil video games, has been an integral part of their world since the first video game. Though we do not know what will happen to Billie along the way, we are pretty certain that there will be something to do with teeth and mutation.

Resident Evil: Confirmed Cast

Though the series was officially confirmed recently, fans have known a lot about it, including the main cast, since June 2021. At that time, the Twitter account Netflix Geeked tweeted that six actors were officially roped in for the series. These include Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska of Charlie’s Angels fame, Siena Agudong from F9: The Fast Saga, Tamara Smart from Are You Afraid of the Dark and Artemis Fowl, Paola Nuñez of Bad Boyz for Life and The Purge TV series fame, and Adeline Rudolph from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale.

As reported by Variety, Lance Reddick will take on the role of Albert Wesker, the antagonist who appeared for the first time in the video game back in 1996. In fact, this character has been featured in quite a few Resident Evil film projects too. We last saw Tom Hopper play the role of Wesker in the 2021 Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Reddick has featured in many popular films and TV series, most notably as Charon in the John Wick film series and Cedric Daniels on HBO’s The Wire.

The character details for Smart, Balinska, Agudong, Nuñez, and Rudolph have yet to be released. The IMDb page for the series also features Tetiana Gaidar, who is listed as a Tactical Weapons Trainer. The list also features Evan Hengst as Carl, Rizelle Januk as Billie Wesker’s teacher, and more. Variety also reported that Ahad Raza Mir would join the cast. However, his role hasn’t been disclosed yet.

Resident Evil: Release Date

The Resident Evil series will drop on Netflix on July 14, 2022, as tweeted by Netflix Geeked. Back in 2020, Netflix announced that the show would consist of eight episodes, each being an hour long. This pretty much follows the same format as most TV shows on streaming services in the last few years. What’s unclear, though, is whether Netflix will be dropping all the eight episodes of Resident Evil in one go or will they be opting for a once-a-week release format.

Considering a number of streaming platforms, including Disney+ and Prime, have been releasing their popular shows every week, it is likely that Netflix would do the same. However, that’s something we’ll only know on July 14.
