Resident Evil Takes Inspiration From the Video Games
Netflix
Netflix’s Resident Evil series uses the video games as a backdrop, treating the new show as canon to the events of the Capcom series. The show has no relation to the previous live-action adaptations, which would be the movie series featuring Milla Jovovich as well as last year’s reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. With no need to link to the films, the series has has the complete creative freedom to take the story into another direction. But using the game series as inspiration also allows for the inclusion of popular characters and creatures from the games.
“My favorite was definitely the Lickers,” Ella Purnell said of her favorite of the creatures in the series, via CBR. “That entire sequence was shot in one take. It was just such a ballet between camera, acting, lighting, stunt rigging… the full nine yards. It really felt like we were there doing it. Plus, I loved having the imagination, and, suddenly, you realize the Licker is actually my friend Danny in a green suit.”
Of the FX work, she added, “Honestly, it was incredible to see the amount of work that had gone into the world-building. The art department did such an incredible job. The prosthetics and special effects were incredible. These zeroes… the supporting artists were in the chair from 4 am in the morning, and they went through physical-training sessions to be able to get their movements down. It made it very easy, as an actor, to fully immerse yourself into this world. That really reflects in the show because we are so in it.”
Resident Evil starts streaming on Netflix on July 14, 2022.
