Netflix has released the trailer for The Andy Warhol Diaries. Executive produced by Murphy, Josh Braun, Stanley Buchthal, Alexis Martin Woodall, Scott Robertson, and Rossi and written and directed by Andrew Rossi, The Andy Warhol Diaries deftly validates Warhol’s belief that the idea is not to live forever but to create art that will. You can watch the trailer below.

The synopsis reads: “This breathtakingly expansive, six-part portrait of a legend chronicles the remarkable life of Andy Warhol from the intimate vantage point offered by the artist’s own posthumously published diaries. Beginning with his childhood in Pittsburgh, the series traces Warhol’s almost unbelievably diverse journey fluidly moving between mediums and through eras as an artist —both revered and reviled — director, publisher, TV producer, scene maker, celebrity, and much more.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

While he was a larger-than-life figure, Warhol was intensely private regarding his personal life. This series truly reveals much about the very complex man through his own words — often in his own voice through the use of cutting-edge AI techniques— and those who worked, created, and played alongside him from the subversive to the mainstream, from John Waters to Rob Lowe.”

“Andy Warhol was famously guarded about his personal thoughts and opinions,” Rossi says of the iconic artist, per Entertainment Weekly. “That’s one reason his Diaries are such a rare and fascinating window; he could be incredibly raw and emotional as he talked to his diarist over the phone. To fully appreciate the radical vulnerability that Andy shares in the Diaries, I felt that we needed to hear the words in Andy’s own voice.”

Rossi adds, “I felt that the AI voice would honor two hallmarks of Andy’s life and artistic practice, stemming from his desire ’to be a machine.’ Andy admired the fact that ‘machines have less problems,’ saying that, ‘I do have feelings, but I wish I didn’t.’ He even had himself made into a robot and a hologram during his lifetime, and he said, ’the reason I’m painting this way is that I want to be a machine.’ So I thought that cloning Andy’s voice could function like a Warholian portrait, and the [Andy Warhol] Foundation approved.”

An Andy Warhol Biopic Is Also in the Works

The story of Andy Warhol has been touched on in Hollywood many times with various actors playing the artist over the years. In 2020, Jared Leto confirmed that he was attached to a planned biopic in which he would be starring as Warhol. The actor said as much with a post on Instagram honoring Warhol on what would have been his 92nd birthday. He didn’t divulge any additional details beyond his casting and the current status of this biopic is unclear.

Yes it’s true I will be playing Andy Warhol in an upcoming film," Leto wrote. “And so grateful and excited about the opportunity. Happy belated birthday Andy. We miss you and your genius.”
