The series will cross oceans and cultural barriers with its intriguing plot and excellent roster of performers. The Brothers Sun follows the Sun crime family who is split between the cities of Taipei and Los Angeles after a dangerous tragedy strikes. Here is everything we know about the forthcoming Netflix series!

The Brothers Sun: The Plot

     A24

The Brothers Sun takes place in Los Angeles and Taiwan. It chronicles the struggle of Taipei gangster Charles Sun, the first Sun brother, as he journeys to Los Angeles to save his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), referred to as “Mama,” and innocent brother Bruce (Sam Song Li). While Charles Sun is a hardened gangster in his home country working for his mob-head father, Bruce Sun is living in Los Angeles with his mother with no idea that his family belongs to a dangerous gangster family.

After the Suns’ father is shot to death in Los Angeles by an unknown assassin, Charles must leave Taipei to protect his mother from the family’s new enemy and confront his estranged younger brother. The latter leads a life untouched by violence and crime. The trio is either deliberate or unwitting members of a treacherous Taipei crime family. They are not afraid to do what has to be done for their safety and the longevity of their family, particularly Mama Sun. Half of the family lives in Taipei, driving the family’s gangster legacy. The other half has left that world behind for a safer way of life in Los Angeles.

We can expect a wide dichotomy and exciting tension between these two completely different brothers. While Bruce has little knowledge of his family’s life of crime in Taipei, Charles has almost no understanding of Bruce’s more laid-back, safer life in Los Angeles. Whatever the events of the series are, these two brothers will have to metaphorically cross oceans to come together and restore unity between the two fractured halves of the family.

The Brothers Sun: The Cast & Crew

     Netflix

The Brothers Sun cast includes box office sensation Michelle Yeoh, The Resort’s Justin Chien, Sam Song Li of AMC’s Better Call Saul, Highdee Kuan of This is Us, and Joon Lee of Dating. Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien, and Sam Song Li will play the central Sun family – Mama Sun and brothers Bruce and Charles. Highdee Kuan will play a hard-working and highly ethical DA who gets caught up in the Sun family’s affairs, while Joon Lee will play Bruce’s best friend, TK. TK is a hopeful gangster with a shady personality but a desire to do better.

While Michelle Yeoh is known for projects like Star Trek and Crazy Rich Asians, she has been on the small and big screen quite a bit recently and shows no signs of slowing down. The actor’s impressive 2022 releases include Everything Everywhere All at Once, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, The School for Good and Evil, and Avatar: The Way of Water.

Reappearing or recurring roles will also include actors Johnny Kou (The Wonderful Wedding), Alice Jewkin (Emily in Paris), Jon Xue Zhang (The Gentlemen), comedian Jenny Yang, Madison Hu (Voyagers), and Rodney To (NCIS).

The show is excitingly being created in an all-Asian writers’ room in addition to featuring an all-Asian cast. The series co-creators are Brad Falchuk of the comedy-drama Glee, the drama series Pose, and the horror shows Scream Queens and American Horror Story. Also working on the series is Byron Wu, who has previous writing credits on the show The Getaway, writing and executive producing the series. Falchuk, of the Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision label that has the linchpin deal with Netflix, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The series is Wu’s largest project to date.

Release Date

The release for the series will be in 2023, with an anticipated production start time of sometime later this year.
