After watching Squid Game and Parasite, many viewers have found themselves intrigued by K-dramas. The Korean wave is starting to wash over as adults and kids listen to BTS, dig into a variety of Korean foods available now at Trader Joe’s, and audiences are ready to delve deeper into the cultural phenomenon taking over the west. Recommendations from Netflix are undoubtedly bursting with all types of K-drama, but which one should you choose? That is easy to answer: The Uncanny Counter.
The Uncanny Counter has action, romance, tragedy, excellent humour, and, much like Squid Game, the Counters have tracksuits! Not in that weird blue-green colour, but sporty red, in which they train and occasionally hunt demons. Oh, yes, they hunt down demons in modern Korea, sending them back to hell once they are judged in Yung, the place between the afterlife and the living.
Who Are the Counters?
Netflix
Each Counter is paired (or possessed) with a Spirit from Yung, enabling humans to have superhuman powers to fight the evil spirits on earth. The Uncanny Counter follows the story of a young high school student who has been disabled by an accident that took the lives of his parents seven years ago. So Mun (Jo Byeong-kyu) is making a webcomic with his high school chums and going for a bite to eat when he is thrown up into the air. This starts his adventure into becoming a counter.

Wi-gen, a spirit of Yung, has been thrown out of the body she sometimes inhabits as her host body has been murdered by a level 3 evil spirit. In her desperate attempt not to perish herself, she is somehow thrown into the body of So Mun. Unusual, as Counters are usually coma victims who are given a chance to wake up as long as they become a Counter. Perhaps it is because So Mun was so close to death?
There are other Counters on So Mun’s team. The teamwork at and out of Eonni’s Noodles. Choo Mae-ok (Yeom Hye-ran) is the chef at Eonni’s and the team healer, and she is paired with the Yung spirit of Su-ho. Choo Mae-ok was in a coma and grieving for her dead son… Su-ho. Do Ha-na (Kim Se-jeong) is the only survivor of her family’s poisoning. She works as a server and is paired with the Yung spirit named Woo-Sik, who gives her super strength and can sense evil spirits giving the team an early warning of impending danger.
Last but not least is Ga Mo-tak (Yoo Jun-sang), an assistant cook with superhuman strength. He is paired with Gi-Ran and recovering from a near-fatal fall from the top of a building. Unfortunately, he also has amnesia.
Connecting the Threads
This unlikely group of do-gooders must convince So Mun to join them. If he does not, his Yung counterpart, Wi-gen, will cease to exist. In an attempt to help convince Mun to join them, Choo Mae-ok heals his deformed leg, and he can now walk and run without needing a cane. Wi-gen adds to that bargaining chip by promising Mun that he can see his parents one last time before they ascend to heaven – but there’s a catch.
In a wild game of body swapping by the level 3 evil spirit, a very intricate web of fate is woven before the audience.
Will There Be The Uncanny Counter Season 2?
For viewers who have been patiently waiting for The Uncanny Counter season 2, there is a perfectly good reason it is taking so long. After the star of Uncanny Counter got his big break in the show, he was falsely accused of school violence and bullying. However, Jo Byeong-kyu is finally putting these accusations behind him and can now concentrate on his career. In June of this year, Naver Entertainment reported confirmation that the show would return for season 2 with the original cast.
Additionally, the production is currently searching for an actor or actress to cast as the villain or main demon for season 2 in which to build their story around. OCN Network and the producers are looking for relatively unknown actors. Much like season 1, which included Choi Kwang-il and Lee Hong-nae as the two devious demons, they are hoping to help catapult a relatively unknown actor into stardom. Both Choi and Lee received rave reviews and had tremendous responses to their portrayals of evil incarnate.
Naver Entertainment also reported that the filming date for season 2 would be postponed until autumn due to prior commitments of some of the actors. Through various interviews, both Byeong-kyu and Se-jeong have both been quoted as saying, “I will definitely participate in season 2.”
