The year 2022 has produced a wealth of spy thrillers, like The Gray Man and latest Noah Centineo’s The Recruit, but the excitement is far from done. Charlie Cox, the star of Marvel’s Daredevil, has returned to Netflix with another intriguing spy thriller. Despite his willingness to reprise his role as a blind lawyer with Catholic guilt in Daredevil: Born Again, he’ll be returning with another compelling story to tell in the upcoming series Treason.

Treason, initially revealed by Deadline back on December 17, 2021, is a five-part series produced by Netflix in collaboration with Binocular Productions, Borderline Productions, Bryncoed Productions, and ITV Studios. The drama is one of Netflix’s most anticipated miniseries, with the tagline “question everything, suspect everyone.” With that in mind, here’s what we know about Treason, the upcoming spy thriller series.

Treason follows Charlie Cox’s Adam Lawrence, an M16 agent with a complicated past that he’s convinced would one day catch up with him and haunt him forever. When a Russian spy named Kara enters Adam’s life, he is compelled to put everything on the line. When things become difficult and the situation worsens, a triangle arises between Kara, Adam, and his wife, Maddy, who work tirelessly to expose each other’s secrets and ruin the one thing they value.

According to Netflix, here’s the official synopsis for the series:

Treason is not your typical espionage thriller but rather a brutal love triangle that entertains in a strange fashion. It may sound odd and upsetting to discover a spy backdrop with a love triangle, but with Charlie Cox in the leading role, fans are willing to overlook everything as long as they get to see him.

“Trained and groomed by MI6, Adam Lawrence’s career seems set. But when the past catches up with him in the form of Kara, a Russian spy with whom he shares a complicated past, he is forced to question everything and everyone in his life. A triangular relationship forms between Kara, Adam and his wife, Maddy; three people who are trying to expose each other’s secrets, navigate political and diplomatic relationships, whilst hanging onto their personal lives, and those they love most.”

Treason: The Cast & Crew

Although the series’ premiere date is approaching, Netflix has yet to release an official trailer, but it has disclosed the cast members who will be entertaining viewers. Charlie Cox will play Adam Lawrence, an M16 agent dealing with a haunting past. The actor is well-known for his work on Marvel’s Daredevil and other notable television shows such as The Defenders and The Kin, as well as cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

While Oona Chaplin portrays his wife, Maddy De Costa, Olga Kurylenko plays the Russian spy Kara Yerzov. Oona Chaplin is the granddaughter of famed comedian Charlie Chaplin. She is most recognized for her roles as Talisa Maegyr in Game of Thrones and Zilpha Geary in Taboo, a 2017 mystery thriller. On the other hand, Olga Kurylenko, a Ukrainian actress, is well-known for her appearances in Black Widow, Johnny English Strikes Again, Quantum of Solace, and Tom Cruise’s Oblivion.

While these three are the main characters propelling the narrative, other cast members include Ciaran Hinds as Si Martin Angelis, Beau Gadsdon as Ella, Samuel Leakey as Callum, Adam James as Patrick Hamilton, Tracy Ifeachor as Dede, Kevin Harvey as Olamide, Avital Lvova as Irina Belova, Alexandra Guelff as Fran Gore, Brian Law as Dan Tao, and Joe Macaulay as Pete Barnes.

The series is directed by Louise Hooper and Sarah O’Gorman. While Hooper is best known for directing the popular series The Witcher, O’Gorman rose to prominence with her work on The Last Kingdom, Cursed, and The Witcher: Blood Origin, the sequel. Matt Charman is writing the script, as he is already familiar with spy stories from his prior works, Bridge of Spies, Suite Franchise, and Black Work.

Furthermore, Jamie Salisbury is composing music for the series based on his extensive expertise in films and television shows such as The Dead End, What We Do in the Shadows, and Lagging.

Release Date

Initially, it was speculated that the series would not be available on Netflix until 2023. However, Netflix UK recently announced via Twitter that the series would premiere on December 26, 2022, which is considered Boxing Day in the United Kingdom and Canada.

Everything Else We Know

Treason, despite being a highly anticipated spy thriller of 2022, has a few revelations still need to be disclosed by Netflix, including the official trailer. These complications might have been created by a sudden change of plans to release the series sooner than expected. This raises another concern: whether the series will be available on Netflix worldwide or exclusively in the United Kingdom.

There is no reason to believe the series will only be available in the United Kingdom, as official confirmation came from Netflix UK. However, given Charlie Cox’s celebrity status, there should be no delays, especially considering fans would go to any extent to watch it as quickly as possible.
