Humans have experienced far too many tragedies to count, and some fade away without ever being mentioned, whether fighting slavery or engaging in a war of dominance between two countries. The Uphaar Cinema fire in Delhi is one such unforgettable and heartbreaking disaster that changed the lives of hundreds of families overnight. Netflix has been releasing a lot of true story adaptations lately, such as Beast of Bangalore, a docuseries about a serial killer, and now we have a miniseries titled Trail by Fire that depicts the 1997 fire tragedy.
Trial by Fire, directed by Randeep Jha and Prashant Nair, is an upcoming Netflix Indian original series based on the best-selling book Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy by Neelam and Shekar Krishnamoorthy. Endemol Shine India and House of Talkies produced the Netflix original, which stars Rajesh Tailang, Ashish Vidyarthi, Rajshri Despande, and Anupam Kher. While we’re on the subject, here’s everything we know about Trial by Fire.

Trail by Fire: The Plot
The story follows Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, a happily married couple with two mischievous children. When the children leave for a late afternoon movie at a local theater, they are pretty supportive because they do not want to take away their freedom, but they have no idea that everything in their lives is about to change from this moment forward.
When the parents learn of the fire at the Uphaar Cinema Hall, they rush to the scene, expecting to find their children alive, but they are unable to save them in time. However, the fire was not an accident since they allege the doors were shut from the outside, making it impossible for the people inside the theater to escape in time. Obviously, it was either carelessness on the part of the authorities or a tactic in a larger conspiracy. Can Neelam and Shekar prove the truth and seek justice for their children as well as those of many other unfortunate families?
The true story behind the miniseries remains one of the most tragic and horrific incidents in Indian history, claiming 59 lives and leaving 100 more gravely injured and traumatized for the rest of their lives. The series will depict how the incident transpired and the lengths victims must go to seek justice for the loss of their loved ones.
Trail by Fire: The Cast & Crew
Netflix
As usual, Netflix has put together a well-thought-out cast to depict this tragic incident. Abhay Deol and Rajshri Deshpande will play Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, respectively. Abhay is a multi-talented person who is not afraid to experiment with his art and use his position as a philanthropist to bring change to society. He’s also a writer and producer, having worked on films including Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dev. D, Raanjhana, and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!
Meanwhile, Rajshri Deshpande has been appearing in films since the late 2000s and is recognized for roles in movies like Salman Khan’s Kick, The Fame Game, Netflix’s Sacred Games, and Talaash: The Answer Lies Within. On his Instagram account before the trailer’s release, Abhay Deol mentioned how hard it was for him to play this role.
As seen in the trailer, Anupam Kher appears to play a crucial part in the miniseries, most likely in an antagonistic role. He is a brilliant actor who has appeared in films and television series, including Hotel Mumbai, The Accidental Prime Minister, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, and Saaransh. He is an excellent addition to the cast, given his versatility in playing any role and his prior depiction of antagonists in Tezaab and Chaalbaz.
“Possibly the hardest role I’ve ever had to portray. I’ve done true stories before, but this one has to be the most tragic. A fire that left a trail of tragedies in its wake. Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy are inspiring examples of the kind of resilience and fortitude it takes to move the needle even slightly in this country. What happened to them and the way they have been forced to fight for justice is truly horrific and, unfortunately, there are countless other people today in similar situations. We are grateful to Netflix for being such courageous partners in telling this story.”
While these three seem to be the central focus of the trailer, other supporting cast members include Rajesh Tailang (Mirzapur), Ashish Vidhyarthi (Rudra: The Edge of Darkness), Ratna Pathak Shah (Kapoor & Sons), Shilpa Shukla (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), Ivan Rodrigues (Uri: The Surgical Strike), and Shardul Bharadwaj (Unpaused).
The series is directed by Randeep Jha and Prashant Nair, who are in charge of different episodes, and the script was written by Shekar Krishnamoorthy, the author of the original book. Randeep has only ever worked as an assistant director, while Prashant Nair has never held a comparable position; as a result, this miniseries marks their directorial debut.
Release Date
Trial by Fire will be released on the streaming platform on January 13, 2023.
