The cast for Man of Steel and Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder’s upcoming Netflix epic, Rebel Moon, has now added Homeland star Rupert Friend and Army of Thieves actor Stuart Martin to the ever-growing roster. Rebel Moon is based on an original idea by Zack Snyder, which began as a more mature Star Wars pitch before becoming the project now set for release on Netflix.

As per a report by The Hollywood Reporter, both Rupert Friend and Stuart Martin will reportedly play villains in Rebel Moon, with Friend taking on the role of the movie’s main villain. The character has been described as “the story’s lead antagonist, a man who leads the armies” who will square off against the main hero of Rebel Moon, played by Star Trek Beyond star Sofia Boutella. Any further details on Stuart Martin’s role are being kept under wraps for now, but he is also said to be villainous, and is therefore likely to be playing one of the soldiers under Friend’s command.

Rupert Friend is best known for roles in the likes of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), Starred Up (2013), Homeland (2012-2017), Hitman: Agent 47 (2015), and The Death of Stalin (2017). Friend is also due to star in the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi opposite Ewan McGregor as the legendary Jedi Master.

Stuart Martin, meanwhile, has starred in such small screen ventures as Game of Thrones, Babylon, Medici: Masters of Florence, and Jamestown, as well as the Netflix prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Army of Thieves.

The Mummy Star Sofia Boutella Will Lead Rebel Moon

Atomic Blonde, Star Trek Beyond, Prisoners of the Ghostland, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Hotel Artemis, and The Mummy star Sofia Boutella has already been announced as the lead Rebel Moon. The actress, who has demonstrated her affinity for both crafting intriguing characters as well as the kinds of physical action that Rebel Moon will no doubt be drowning in, will no doubt make an excellent central point for Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic to gravitate around.

The official logline for Rebel Moon reads like peak Snyder and says, “When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.”

Snyder has teased the atmosphere and epic visuals that he plans to create in Rebel Moon, even comparing his vision to the DC adventure Man of Steel. “The beginning of Man of Steel has pretty big science fiction elements in it, right? Krypton,” Snyder said during an interview with Post-Credit Podcast. “That’s kind of what we’re doing in Rebel Moon, but on the biggest steroids that I can give it. Frankly, what I’m really interested [in] with this movie is creating a romantic sci-fi film on a scale that is frankly as big as you can make the movie.”

Written and directed by Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon does not yet have a release date but is expected to begin production soon.
