The premiere date has been set for the true crime docuseries I Just Killed My Dad. The three-episode documentary series will premiere globally on Aug. 9, 2022. It is directed by Skye Borgman, director of the critically acclaimed Girl in the Picture, which currently ranks at No. 2 on Netflix’s global Top 10 English Films list. Nicole Sorrenti executive produced and Half Yard Productions produced.
Per Netflix, the unprecedented docuseries tells the “unbelievable, never-been-told-before true story of the Templet family. Anthony Templet shot his father and never denied it. But why he did it is a complex question with profound implications that go far beyond one family. This three-episode documentary series explores the psyche of Anthony leading up to the events of June 3, 2019, and the journey of his mental and emotional aftermath.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Templet was 17 at the time of the killing. After a scuffle that resulted in Templet shooting his father dead, the teenager called 911 shortly after and claimed he’d reacted in self-defense after he’d been attacked. Templet was initially charged with second-degree murder, though those charges were reduced as the young man’s history of alleged abuse from his father came to light. In 2021, Templet pled no contest to negligent homicide and was given five years of supervised probation with credit for time served. If he earns his GED, agrees to counseling, and either gets a job or enrolls in school full-time, he will also be eligible to have his record expunged.
“What would time in jail do for this young man who has never actually had a chance to learn or to have friends or to be in the world,” prosecutor Dana Cummings said at the time of sentencing, via WAFB. “What would that achieve? I just think it would keep him from ever being able to be productive.”
Templet’s attorney, Jarrett Ambeau, added, “When I saw this injustice, I said, ‘Absolutely, no way should this kid be in jail.’ Well, that’s the outcome we have. It may not be the thing we have hoped but this is an imperfect system. We try to find the best possible justice and I think we got that today.”
Netflix Has Been Offering Plenty of True Crime Content
In recent years, Netflix has invested heavily in true crime documentaries. They’ve delved into the world of serial killers with docs like Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes, Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer, The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness, and Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes.
One of the latest releases in this genre from Netflix is Girl in the Picture. The horrifying doc has garnered high reviews from critics and tells the story of investigators unraveling the true identity of a woman found dead on the side of a road in Oklahoma City. High viewership has seen the doc ranking high in Netflix’s Top 10 list.
I Just Killed My Dad starts streaming on Netflix on Aug. 9, 2022.
