There are actors today that are appearing on our screens amongst some of the most well known and reputable talents, yet are unfortunately being totally under-recognized for their work. Some have been in the industry for years and some are just starting to build up their reputation, yet all have appeared on our screens more or less unbeknownst to us, and a few have even won awards; but for some strange reason, despite their plethora of roles, they are not well heard of and are not gaining the appreciation they deserve.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of new movies and TV shows to be excited about, and there’s no doubt that we’ll see some of these most recent actors making their way to stardom as they bag new roles. With a breakthrough just around the corner, these recent talents all deserve some more attention, so let’s take a look at what they have achieved and why they should be getting more appreciation.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Jharrel Jerome

     Netflix

He may be well-recognized most for his role in the Netflix miniseries When They See Us, but Jharrel Jerome has gained very little recognition for his talent. Jerome has also starred in 2016’s acclaimed drama film Moonlight, which even won the Academy Award for Best Picture. When auditioning originally for “Young Korey” in When They See Us, director Ava DuVernay asked him to read the script for “older Korey” and was incredibly impressed with his talents. Eventually, he was the only actor to be cast for both roles of the younger and older characters, which means he was able to act as both a teenager and an older adult, with two very different personalities and maturity levels - talented, right?

Having two roles to be responsible for brought a great challenge and double the work for Jerome, but he was committed and managed to pull it off, earning himself an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor. Having been given the chance, his potential was noticed, and now it’s time for the world to recognize the dedication, hard work, and pure talent of Jharrel Jerome.

Jacob Tremblay

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Canadian actor Jacob Tremblay started his acting career at only five years old. His debut role was in Smurfs 2 in 2013, but he quickly climbed the ladder and only two years later appeared as Jack Newsom in Room, where he even won himself the Critics Choice Award for Best Young Performer. Since then, his impressive career has escalated and he’s appeared in hits like 2017’s Wonder, where he brilliantly played a child with Treacher Collins Syndrome, and 2019’s sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.

Recently, he has bagged himself more voice acting roles, between the animated superhero comedy Harley Quinn (as Damian Wayne / Robin) and Pixar’s Luca last year. We have had the pleasure of watching this adorable actor (and Star Wars and LEGO super-fan) evolve and grow into an amazing talent, which is for some strange reason still being quite unnoticed. He has thrown himself into every role and there’s no doubt that he will be hitting our screens again soon, where that’s behind an animation or in person, we can’t wait.

Theo Germaine

     Peacock

Theo Germaine is most recognizable for their role as Chris in Work in Progress and the student and politician campaign adviser James Sullivan in the hit Netflix show The Politician. While their role is a trans male, it was refreshing to see it be normalized and for the show to not revolve itself around the character’s gender. Germaine felt connected to the role in a way, as they spent their teen life as female before finding their happiness as identifying as non-binary.

Germaine is a huge advocate for more opportunities for non-binary and trans actors in the industry, and it’s fantastic to see; they Germaine spoke to MovieWeb about their new role in the 2022 horror movie They/Them opposite Kevin Bacon, saying they love that they can “present new ideas that maybe other people will reference in the future.” Not to mention, their brilliant acting and the development of their skills is awesome, which should definitely be getting more recognition.

Sophia Lillis

     Imagem Filmes

Known for playing Beverly Marsh in the horror films It and It: Chapter 2, and as the star of Netflix’s I Am Not Okay with This, where she plays a teenager with telekinetic powers, Sophia Lillis also starred in the great HBO miniseries Sharp Objects. When her career began through acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Manhattan, it wasn’t long before one of her teachers recommended her to a friend, launching her career from the get-go. Lillis has brilliant talent and it’s clear that soon we will be seeing her everywhere; she is an incredibly down to earth and she always brings a fresh, enjoyable character to the screen and it should definitely be getting recognised more; we are all excited to see where her future takes her.

Jonathan Bailey

Jonathan Bailey has only just begun to be recognized for his work on TV, but he has been on Broadway from the age of seven and was nominated for various theater awards. While he has been on TV for some time, he has only become noticed because of his recent role in Bridgerton. His ability to perform any role he is given should not go unnoticed, and the carefully choreographed intimate scenes with his onscreen partner, Simone Ashley, were fantastic.

Bailey decided to go into acting after watching a production of Oliver at only five-years-old and never imagined himself to be cast as a lead role. As a gay man, when he was cast in Bridgerton, he was delighted to know that his sexuality didn’t define his ability to fit into any role. Bailey is humble and a brilliant actor and should be recognized more for his incredible talents.

Hala Finley

     Lionsgate

Hala Finley is a brilliant young actress, who has scored herself a fantastic and successful career at such a young age. Best known for her work in Man with a Plan between 2016 and 2020 and 2020’s We Can Be Heroes, she has now gained wonderful reviews and praise for her work in Anna Gutto’s 2022 thriller Paradise Highway, which is surrounded by dark themes of human trafficking. Her role as a young girl who had to grow up too fast is exceptional and spreads an important message and awareness; with plenty of tough scenes to handle, Finley knew what she needed to do and wasn’t afraid of putting her heart into the role.

Speaking of Hala’s talent, Anna Gutto told MovieWeb, “Hala, she has this incredible ability, she has this strength in her, and she’s vulnerable, but she also has an incredible imagination.” She put on a powerful and heartbreaking performance that should be getting more recognition as a brilliant budding actress full of opportunity.

Brian Tyree Henry

As an incredible talent who has received an array of brilliant roles, it is a surprise Brian Tyree Henry doesn’t gain more recognition; most people might recognize him as ‘Paper Boi’ from the series Atlanta, but few know his actual name. Outside Atlanta, he may be well known for his role in If Beale Street Could Talk but also appeared in Joker, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Eternals; he has also just starred alongside Brad Pitt in Bullet Train and Jennifer Lawrence in Red, White and Water.

His performances show that he is capable of taking the spotlight and embodying his characters the best he can, and always brings a unique atmosphere to his role; not limiting himself means that he is open and transparent to any role he would be given, making him an exceptional talent. Henry is continuing to do incredible work in big films, so hopefully sometime soon his name will be as recognizable as any other major star.
