Disney+’s Loki left several questions unanswered about TVA’s place in the MCU and the conception of the multiverse in the continuity. The series features several twists and turns, making it a highly unpredictable telling. But the high point of all the great things about Loki Season 1 was He Who Remains. It was a cheerful moment when Jonathan Majors appeared on-screen, giving the audience a hint at the impending chaos coming to the MCU in the form of Kang. The actor had already been roped in to play Kang before the season finale, making it pretty easy to connect the dots.

In the series, Majors donned a perfect look for an all-powerful administrator of the universe, wearing his long purple coat with a green robe beneath it. He had a beard which went well with his hair and his quirky smile. Though He Who Remains was an original character created for the series, he was based on and inspired by Immortus. The character was a composite of He Who Remains from the comics and Immortus. And at one point, Jonathan Majors was supposed to don a costume that would have resembled Immortus far more than it did in the series.

The new artbook (via ComicBook.com), Marvel Studios’ Loki: The Art of Series, has revealed some concept art pictures for Majors’ comic-accurate costume and look as He Who Remains. The look features Majors wearing a hat similar to that of Immortus in the comics.

He Who Remains was the person who lived at the end of time and controlled the sacred timeline from breaking off into branches. Immortus, however, has played a more mainstream role in the comics. Immortus has both sided with and fought against Kang The Conqueror at different times. The character is the future self of Kang, aka Nathaniel Richards.

In the season finale of Loki, He Who Remains offers Loki and Sylvie an opportunity to run the TVA and the sacred timeline. However, hell-bent on vengeance, Sylvie kills He Who Remains, which breaks off several branches of the sacred timeline, allowing the latter’s dangerous variants to break free from their respective universes, eventually threatening all realities with a multiversal war.

The ending suggests that Kang has taken over the TVA, controlling all timelines simultaneously. But it would be some time before we figure out which Kang variant is responsible for the impending doom. Jonathan Majors will first return to play Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The actor is also confirmed to play the primary antagonist in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

The actor is to play multiple variants of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s The Multiverse Saga. Earlier, talking about Majors’ role in MCU’s second saga, Kevin Feige said,

We may see a variant of Kang reappear in Loki Season 2, which will stream on Disney+ in mid-2023.

It comes down to the cast and with Jonathan Majors, who I think took over the Hall H stage, you know, in three minutes he was up there. It’s amazing, and I said to him there’s nobody’s shoulders I’d rather be putting the multiverse saga on than his. It’s really impressive what Jonathan Majors is able to do and all the different incarnations, variants, if you will, of Kang that we will see him do. It’s really cool.
