Director Christopher Nolan will return to theaters next year with Oppenheimer, and we now have another look at 28 Days Later and Dunkirk star Cillian Murphy in the lead role. Coming courtesy of the latest issue of Total Film, the image once again finds Murphy wearing the iconic hat of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project during World War II. You can check out the latest look at Oppenheimer below.

The new image centers on Cillian Murphy as he no doubt hides a pensive face under the brim of his hat. “It’s a story of immense scope and scale,” director Christopher Nolan says of Oppenheimer. Which, if you have seen any of his other movies, you should have already assumed.

Oppenheimer is based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The story will follow Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who contributed to the Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the atomic bomb, exploring the man’s moral struggle and the inner crisis he faced after seeing what his invention was capable of.

The first (and so far only) trailer for Oppenheimer was released earlier this year. The first look suggests that, once again, Nolan will use time to tell this real-life tale, something that lead star Cillian Murphy has hinted at in the past. “The difference with this one is the story is there, everybody knows what happened. But Chris is telling it in a different way, as with Chris you would expect,” Murphy said of Oppenheimer. “That’s all I can say. Is it focused on a particular period of his life? The Manhattan Project, perchance? I’m not going to say. They’d kill me — they’re so strict!”

Christopher Nolan Brings Together a Stellar Cast in Oppenheimer

     Universal Pictures

It is not hyperbolic to say that Oppenheimer will feature one of the most star-studded casts of all time. Alongside Cillian Murphy in the lead role, the Christopher Nolan movie has amassed a who’s-who list of A-listers, including A Quiet Place star Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, The Martian’s Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, and The Wonder’s Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock.

But that’s not all. Not even close. Now, we suggest putting on some shades to protect your eyes from all the stars, as Oppenheimer will also feature the likes of Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, David Dastmalchian, Jason Clarke, Josh Peck, Tony Goldwyn, Casey Affleck, Alex Wolff, Olivia Thirlby, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, and, somehow, more.

Written and directed by the filmmaker behind the likes of The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet, Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer sees the director move away from Warner Bros. Pictures for the first time. Thus, Universal Pictures is scheduled to release Oppenheimer in the United States on July 21, 2023.
