Idris Elba Thinks the Luther Franchise Could Be His James Bond

     Netflix

While Idris Elba has been a 007 favorite for some time, the actor is unlikely to need to join the iconic franchise, believing that John Luther could be his James Bond. “I reference Bond as a template for the type of film we’re going for,” Elba explained recently. “John is a leading character in a film that he’s the hero of. That’s the comparison I’m making. Some films do them well – Bond is one of them. But my ambition for it is to have that sort of scale, that reverence. I want people to be like: ‘Ooh! Luther, the first film? Wicked.’ And to continue that. And then maybe later down the line, when I’m too old, someone else will step in to play John.”

Directed by Jamie Payne and written by Luther creator Neil Cross, Luther: The Fallen Sun stars Idris Elba alongside Cynthia Erivo, Dermot Crowley, Jess Liaudin, Lauryn Ajufo, and Natasha Patel. War for the Planet of the Apes and The Lord of Rings star Andy Serkis will star as the villain of the piece, David Robey, a tech billionaire who uses surveillance technology to manipulate and kill civilians, with the actor revealing that he was disturbed by how dark things get during the events of Luther: The Fallen Sun. “When I first read the script, I almost wanted to throw it in the bin and have a shower,” Serkis said. “I don’t think I’ve come across anything quite as dark for a long time. And I thought: ‘In fact, do I really actually at this point in the world and time and my life, want to go down this particular rabbit hole of something that’s so hard to fathom in humanity?’”

Luther: The Fallen Sun is scheduled to be released in March 2023 by Netflix.
