Speculation about the future of The Witcher following the departure of Henry Cavill has continued to rumble on since the announcement was made that Cavill would be leaving the show after the coming season. While the show is guaranteed a fourth season, and season five is thought to be shooting back to back with that, there are reportedly no plans for anything beyond that. Following the terrible reaction to The Witcher: Blood Origin, it seems that a cautious approach is being taken any possible adventures beyond the fifth season.
Reported by Redanian Intelligence, sources have noted that The Witcher is on shaky ground, and the plan for seasons 4 and 5 to film back to back have already made many believe this is a sure signal that Netflix are planning on winding up the series after this. However, most of this is speculation until all confirmed by Netflix, but the unrest among fans of the franchise at the moment is certainly not helping the issue and until Liam Hemsworth makes his first appearance as Geralt, no one is really going to know what the actual reaction to his take on the character is going to be.

Plans for the future of The Witcher beyond the coming season have been kept under wraps for now, but early last year it was revealed that Season 4 was being “mapped out.” While that was before the bombshell departure of Cavill, the change of actor is assumed to not have any impact on the actual plot or scope of the show’s next seasons.
Can The Witcher Overcome The Loss of Henry Cavill?
Netflix
There are very few times that a major series has recast its lead role after three seasons unless they have changed the character entirely. For this reason, The Witcher is already on uncertain ground with the recasting of Geralt. Seeing the intense fan reaction to the original announcement that Henry Cavill would not be continuing in the role beyond season 3, and the backlash that brought to spin-off show, The Witcher: Blood Origin, there really is a possibility that the show will be brought down by disgruntled fans who cannot get over the loss of Cavill, who was to them the perfect embodiment of the character.
For Liam Hemsworth, the daunting prospect of taking on an iconic role will be made even more impossible, as his performance is not going to be allowed to stand on its own without being directly compared to that of Cavill. However, at the time of his casting, Hemsworth was happy to be taking over the mantle. He said:
Whether this enthusiasm continues when his first episodes air, is something that we still have a little wait to find out. The Witcher season 3 will debut on Netflix in the summer.
“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
