Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has been pulling out the parody card for its latest poster, with Sonic being imposed on the Bat-Signal with the hashtag #BlueJustice. There is nothing like drawing on a cultural icon when it comes to getting attention, and considering Sonic is every bit as recognizable as the Dark Knight, the bit of cross-universe promotion will benefit both sides. The Batman is ready to release in theaters this week, while Sonic the Hedgehog 2 doesn’t arrive until April 8th, so it is not surprising that they want to gain a little attention from the big release of Robert Pattison’s Batman movie.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sonic The Hedgehog was one of the biggest surprises when it hit cinemas back in 2020. Coming just prior to the Covid pandemic, the film became one of the last big cinema releases to get a good run at the box office of that year, and indeed most of the following 18 months. Becoming a big enough hit to secure a sequel, Sonic became the biggest selling game-based movie, and the follow-up is expected to do the same. Ben Schwartz is back as the voice of the titular blue hedgehog, or Blue Justice as he would like to be known, along with Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Miles “Tails” Prower and Idris Elba giving his vocal to Knuckles the Echidna. Also returning to reprise their roles are James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey.

The latest Sonic poster features only the character himself, and while it does cheekily note that the name is “trademark pending,” the Blue Justice tag has also been adopted by the movie’s official Twitter account as they continued to share the latest trailer. With Sonic’s iconic face as seen in the Sega Game series projected on the sky, and the character himself standing on a rooftop in a very Batman-esque pose, there is undoubtedly no coincidence about the timing.

Sonic The Hedgehog Will Return Regardless of The Sequel’s Box Office Performance

     Paramount Pictures

Most movies have the trauma of watching their box office numbers roll in before they get the go-ahead for a sequel or spin-off, but very much like The Batman, these are already seemingly in place before a single scene has been seen by regular audiences. It was announced last month that not only would Sonic be returning for a third movie outing, but there will also be a Knuckles spin-off series that will be heading to Paramount+.

Sonic is one of Paramount’s big recent success stories, so it is not surprising that they want to try and leverage some of that popularity for their streaming platform. With Paramount’s recent announcement that they are going to be pulling in a lot of their best-known shows and movies to exclusively stream on Paramount+, there is no doubt that if Sonic 2, its sequel and the Knuckles series all hit the mark, then there could well be even more to come from the blue speedster in the not too distant future.
