Star Wars animation branch continues to grow with the announcement of Tales of the Jedi, a brand new anthology series of shorts that will get its own panel at next month’s Star Wars Celebration. With animated shows such as The Clone Wars, and Star Wars: Visions getting good reviews, Lucasfilm hopes to keep the run of animated shows going with their newest addition to the long-running sci-fi franchise.

The confirmation of the new series came from the website of the Star Wars Celebration event, which takes place from May 26, and this year coincides with the release of the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Taking place in Anaheim, California, the panel for Tales of the Jedi will take place between 2:30-3:30 PM on May 28 and will be hosted by Amy Ratcliffe and have Dave Filoni as a special guest. The original announcement on the site was removed for a short time, probably having been uploaded prematurely, but after the news and screenshots made their way onto Twitter and Reddit, the panel details were added back to the site.

The news that Star Wars legend Filoni will be part of the panel suggests that he will have a hand in the series, and that can only mean good things for the latest addition to the franchise. While there are currently no details available about how many episodes the series will have or how long they will be, with so many other projects currently in development, it is enough for now to know that it exists.

Star Wars is Branching Out, But Seems Stuck in the Past

Since the arrival of Disney+, the Star Wars orientated release slate has been much more focused on series than movies. To prove that point, the only theatrical film currently in any stage of production is the Patty Jenkins directed Rogue Squadron. However, that recently had a rocky patch and could still end up being delayed further than next year. So far, shows like The Mandalorian and the imminent Obi-Wan Kenobi have managed to reinvigorate the franchise, but like most of the other projects that have been announced, they all feature historical stories.

There are several series in active development at the moment for Disney+, including Andor and Ahsoka, which all sit in and around the story of Star Wars that has been told so far in the movie franchise. When it comes to the future of the saga, beyond the divisive sequel trilogy that ended with 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, there is still no confirmation of how Lucasfilm intends to address what happens beyond the Skywalker Saga in a galaxy not so far away as it originally was.

At the moment, all eyes are on the return of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that debuts with a double episode on May 27. After almost 20 years away from the franchise, fans are eager to see the pair once again go head to head as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, respectively. There is a lot of expectation on the series to deliver a show that matches the quality of The Mandalorian after The Book of Boba Fett fell a bit flat with audiences.
