DreamWorks has released the third and final trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It will premiere in theaters just in time for the holidays this December. This new adventure brings Puss in Boots back to the Shrek universe after more than a decade. The spinoff will be interesting to watch, both in terms of visuals and narrative. As shown in the film’s initial preview in March, it’s been revealed that Puss will be saving his hometown of San Ricardo from an ominous enemy and recounting the many daring ways he has spent his last eight lives. In this upcoming movie, Puss wishes for the return of some of his nine lives after realizing he’s nearing the end of them.

Puss’ enemies are also revealed in the new trailer, as well as which characters will return for the sequel. The feline hero will be voiced by Antonio Banderas and will be teamed up with other well-known personalities. As he embarks on this adventure, the cat seeks the assistance of his former partner, Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek) and is aided by the chatty and cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillen). The three characters will have to work together to stay one step ahead of antagonists, such as Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and the Three Bears Crime Family, ‘Big’ Jack Horner (John Mulaney), and The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura).

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Explores the Darker Side

     DreamWorks

In previous movies, Puss in Boots didn’t think twice about his own mortality and never hesitated when facing danger. It has now become apparent to him that he does not have nine lives to spare. As described in DreamWorks Animation’s official synopsis, the cat recognizes that he has wasted precious time and plans to get reborn.

“Daring outlaw Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet.

Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious PiB as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek Pinault).”

Shrek films have always had a dark edge compared to most family-friendly animated films, but Puss in Boots sounds darker than ever. According to Collider.com, Director Joel Crawford explained that the movie is about introducing this fairy-tale character in a unique way:

Looking at Puss in Boots: The Last Wish from a wider perspective, one could argue that after years of adventure, he has burnt through eight of his nine lives because of his passion for adventure. Puss’ last hope for regaining what he has lost might be discovering what this mythical wish can actually do for him. On December 21st, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will make its big-screen debut, just days after James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water.

“There are darker tones in this. Puss is down to the last of his nine lives. He’s grappling with his mortality, his fear of death is the engine that drives the movie, and the Grimm fairy tales were a big inspiration.”
