Zoey 101 is one of Nickelodeon’s most successful teen series to date. The hit teen dramedy rose to prominence during its four-season run from 2005 to 2008 and amassed a devoted and long-standing fanbase that never lost hope in the Zoey 101’s return. In 2015, Nickelodeon released a short to commemorate Zoey 101’s 10th anniversary, which ended in a cliffhanger and left room for a future revival. Luckily, devout fans no longer have to dream of the story’s continuation now that a Zoey 101 reboot is officially in the works with Nickelodeon, according to Deadline.

The tentatively titled reboot Zoey 102 is a feature-length film based on the series’ original characters. Plot details are still forthcoming; however, the film will follow the former PCA gang as adults, reuniting for a wedding. The sequel has begun production in North Carolina and is set to premiere this year exclusively on Paramount+.

Spears expressed excitement about returning to her role as Zoey and continuing the series’ legacy.

Jamie Lynn Spears is reprising her role as Zoey Brooks and has taken on an additional role as an executive producer. Many original cast members are also returning to their roles, including Sean Flynn as Chase Matthews, Christopher Massey as Michael Barret, Erin Sanders as Quinn Pensky, Matthew Underwood as Logan Reese, Abby Wilde as Stacey Dillsen, and Jack Salvatore as Mark Del Figgalo. As it stands, there’s no confirmation on Victoria Justice or Austin Butler’s return for the movie sequel. Alexa Nikolas, who portrayed Zoey’s best friend Nicole Bristow in seasons 1 and 2, has also not been confirmed for the Zoey 101 reunion. Given the history with her cast mates and her absence from past cast reunions, Nikolas’ return is unlikely.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be back alongside my PCA family and continue the story of Zoey and all the characters fans know and love. As an executive producer, it’s been an exciting opportunity to work with such incredible talent as well as Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.”

Nancy Hower has been brought on as the director for Zoey 102. The script comes from All That’s (2019) writers Monica Sherer & Madeline Whitby. Spears executive produces alongside Hower, Sherer, Whitby, and Alexis Fisher. Nickelodeon Studios is overseeing the production of the upcoming feature.

Zoey 101’s Revival Has Been Teased for Years

Although the fourth season offered an hour-long finale to close out the beloved series, viewers were distraught by the popular series’ abrupt end. Throughout the years, the show’s popularity and fans’ prolonged desire for a follow-up series or movie has only persisted. Nickelodeon first opened the door for Zoey 101’s revival with their 10th anniversary short. In the five-minute clip, Michael stops Chase from getting engaged to his current girlfriend by presenting Chase with Zoey’s DVD from the “Time Capsule” episode in season 2. After hearing Zoey’s true feelings about him, Chase abandons his girlfriend in a hurried search to find Zoey. Outside the 10-year short, most of the principal cast came back together for an episode of All That in 2019 and made appearances in her Follow Me music video featuring Chantel Jeffries the following year.

Spears hinted at the potential reboot in 2020, mentioning that she wanted the sequel to appeal to Zoey 101’s original audience that grew up watching the show when it first aired. “Everything and anything is on the table, whether that’s a movie or a series. In all of the discussions I’ve had with Nickelodeon – which are in baby stages, by the way – the main thing is figuring out the right home for the reboot. We couldn’t do it justice by putting it back on Nickelodeon because our fanbase has grown into young adults like me, 29 or around the same age,” Spears stated.

Paramount+ currently hosts a number of Nickelodeon programs, including Spongebob Squarepants and the iCarly reboot. So naturally, Zoey 102’s placement is a perfect fit for the steamer. Although the feature will be YA-appropriate, longtime fans can still expect a mature tone with the upcoming sequel. “We want to tell stories about where the characters are now. We want to connect with the fans and touch on topics that are impacting millennials, so it would have to be aged up and be more mature."
