In a filmography spanning more than four decades, Nicolas Cage has been part of probably the most diverse filmography of all time. Cage has worked on films like Leaving Las Vegas, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, 8mm, and Adaptation, all of which have allowed him to work with some of the most eccentric directors, including Spike Jonze, Francis Ford Coppola, Joel Schumacher, and Sir Werner Herzog. On the other hand, his films like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and other moderate to low-key Direct-to-Video appearances have put him in the negative critical frame. Yet, despite this kind of blended filmography, his performances as an actor (or as he prefers, ‘Thespian’) have mostly been appreciated, even winning him an Academy Award for Best Actor and have turned him into an Internet sensation.

And as he plans on making a mainstream comeback, the actor has revealed that he looks forward to working with a few directors he hasn’t had the privilege to work with. In a recent AMA on Reddit, Cage revealed a list of four directors that he would like to collaborate with in his forthcoming career years. The list included:

And just like his diverse filmography, the list he revealed also has a really diverse set of directors, each having their distinct style of filmmaking and each of them known for tackling distinct themes.

Cage’s first choice Christopher Nolan has become every actor’s desire. Known for toggling with the time and space manipulation in his directorial style, Nolan is best known for his work in The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet. In his next, Oppenheimer, he is assembling a large ensemble, diving deep into the history of the Manhattan Project and its creator, Robert J. Oppenheimer.

Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are mostly known for their unique take on the horror genre, wherein both directors focus on inducing a scare for the audience by creating an intensely dark and negative atmosphere in their films and negating the good vibes from character arcs and their attributes.

Alas, Spike Lee, another Academy Award winner and the veteran director, is known for his films that hustle with the themes of racial bias, such as in Da 5 Bloods and BlacKkKlansman.

It’s interesting that Cage chose these directors, adhering to his previous statements, where he acknowledged that he’ll try to become extremely selective with the films he chooses to do ahead in his career. Cage has been cited as a great actor by a number of directors, including that Herzog. And his ability to pull off characters of the most bizarre attributes is known to everyone. So, it wouldn’t be a bad call if any of these directors rope him in for their next, which would definitely make it an exciting and anticipated project.
