Veteran actress Nicole Kidman shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon and has now joined the cast of an upcoming spy drama called Lioness, according to Variety. The series is created by Taylor Sheridan, known for creating Yellowstone and its prequels, 1883 and 1923. While a spy series based on a real-life CIA program is a far cry from his already-classic Westerns, he’ll have the support of an impressive cast, including Zoe Saldaña. Both Kidman and Saldaña are set to executive produce the series.
Kidman’s character is Kaitlyn Meade, the CIA’s Senior Supervisor. She’s put in a difficult position, as per the official description:

While we don’t know exactly who Kidman’s character is mentoring, it’s likely the main character, who up-and-coming actress Laysla De Oliveira will play. The character, Cruz Manuelos, is described as “a rough-around-the-edges but passionate young Marine recruited to join the CIA’s Lioness Engagement Team to help bring down a terrorist organization from within.”
“She must juggle the trappings of being a woman in the high-ranking intelligence community, a wife that longs for the attention she herself can’t even give and a mentor to someone veering suspiciously close to the same rocky road she’s found herself on.”
A documentary similarly concerning the CIA program, also called Lioness, was released in 2008. It was directed by Meg McLagan and Daria Sommers. It used journal excerpts, archival footage, and interviews with members of the “Lioness” program who had gone to Iraq as clerks and engineers in order to gain intelligence. While we don’t know how much the upcoming series will dramatize or adapt the real-life events, Taylor Sheridan is known for his dedication to realism in his historical TV shows.
