Netflix’s hit true crime series DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has been leveled with various controversies, but one aspect that everyone appears to be in agreement on is that the casting was excellent. Along with Evan Peters with his role as the titular murderer, Niecy Nash has also drawn a lot of praise for playing Glenda Cleveland, a concerned neighbor whose pleas for an investigation were ignored by law enforcement. It’s a role unlike any other that Nash has ever been seen in before, and she absolutely nailed it.

In a new video released on YouTube by Netflix about the making of Monster, Nash became emotional when addressing her casting in the series. While touching on the popularity of the show, the actress admits she didn’t know why it landed so well with viewers, but regardless, she’s “grateful” to be a part of it. Fighting back tears, Nash tells co-creator Ryan Murphy that she sees her role in the series as as “personal gift” that was presented to her after others in Hollywood told her she’d never find success outside of the comedy genre. As Nash explains:

Ryan Murphy Wrote the Role of Glenda Cleveland With Niecy Nash in Mind

     Netflix

Ryan Murphy has known Nash for many years, and when it came time to write Monster, he knew right away that the Reno 911! star would be perfect for Glenda Cleveland. That meant no auditions needed to be held for casting this role, as it didn’t take much convincing for Nash to get involved.

Nash was interested in the part, despite the challenging nature of the role, and she accepted the part. Though, Nash also said that Murphy already had her on board before she even saw the script, as she has trust in his creative vision. Given the acclaim the series has drawn, especially in regard to its acting, it would appear that Murphy was spot on with his hunch about Nash’s potential in drama.
