Television is always changing due to social trends, culture, and technology. The 1990s saw a plethora of tv sitcoms that enraptured millions of viewers every week. Since there was no DVR in the ’90s, it was up to the viewer to make sure they tuned in the night it aired. It was a time of a ritualistic huddling-together in front of the tv to watch beloved characters navigate humorous situations.

That being said, with the current social and cultural trends, not every show from the 90s has aged well. For instance, shows like Married…With Children wouldn’t make it past the first episode. The content is far too sexist and outdated. In recent years, we have seen a decline in comedic sitcoms with laugh tracks and some would say that the American sitcom is actually dead.

Modern viewers want and expect more out of their shows; they want a show that is current and engaging from start to finish. Although many of these shows may be viewed for nostalgic purposes, the chances of these ’90s shows premiering today are slim to none. Let’s travel back all the way to the 1990s and look at ten tv shows that could never air today.

10 Boy Meets World

     ABC

Although none of the subject matter would really be considered controversial, the show in general just isn’t what audiences are looking for today. Boy Meets World is a dialogue-based show that was filmed on television sets and the series almost reads like a play. Although the show was funny and is still viewed for nostalgic purposes, high school is a lot different today compared to the ’90s and it would be extremely hard for the current youth to relate to its content.

9 Johnny Bravo

     Cartoon Network

Can you imagine a show about a womanising, sexist man trying to pick up women all day being made today? Johnny Bravo is an animated series that has been deemed offensive by many and it’s probably a small chance you will even see it aired on Cartoon Network anymore. The premise is far too outdated and it just isn’t the type of show that people want to watch anymore. Fortunately, it seems that the world will be just fine without Johnny Bravo.

8 Married…With Children

     Fox

Married…With Children was one of the longest-running sitcoms in history. Week after week, audiences tuned in to watch the high jinks of the Bundy family. Recently, the series has been widely criticised for its sexist and transphobic jokes throughout the series. Sitcoms like this just aren’t what viewers want to see today. Also, family dynamics and values have changed a lot since the 1990s making this show very outdated.

7 Home Improvement

For years, everybody loved watching Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor (Tim Allen) navigate family life while hosting his own tool show on Home Improvement. The series was based on the comedy of Tim Allen and showcased some very talented actors including Patricia Richardson and Richard Karn. With that said, the modern TV viewer would have little to no interest in watching a series based around a middle aged man playing around with tools all day.

6 Friends

     NBC

Friends was an international-hit series that is still binge-watched today. Although people may still watch the show, it would be nearly impossible to make it today. The show, folloing six adult friends in New York City, lacked diversity and portrayed an unrealistic look at what living in New York City is like for the average person. Monica’s luxurious apartment alone, has made fans question for years how she was able to afford it.

5 Dawson’s Creek

     Warner Bros

Dawson’s Creek, which premiered on The WB, follows the life of Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek) and his friends as they navigate love, school, and growing up. The series launched the careers of Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams and ran for six seasons. Although the show was beloved for years, nowadays it would probably be considered quite melodramatic and unrealistic, not to mention the lack of diversity in the characters.

4 Walker Texas Ranger

     CBS

Everybody loves a good Chuck Norris joke. The hard-punching action star has been taking down bad guys for years in his many movies. Walker Texas Ranger ran for eight seasons on CBS, and has become the brunt of many jokes. The show is filled with cheesy lines, hilarious beat-downs, and some pretty bad performances. Although it is loved by many, a show this cheesy could never be made today.

3 Saved By The Bell

This high school sitcom Saved by the Bell was the perfect portrayal of ’90s culture. The hair, clothes, and sets were flashy and colorful showing you what style was like in the 1990s. The series followed a group of high school friends and their daily high jinks. Many of the premises are questionable and the show was very cheesy at times. Current audiences definitely want a more realistic view of high school life in the modern day.

2 The Ren & Stimpy Show

     Nickelodeon

Ren & Stimpy was a bizarre cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon in the 1990s. The show followed a cartoon chihuahua and cat and their zany adventures. Many of the scenes are grotesque and disturbing. The content just wouldn’t fly today, especially to children. Nickelodeon has changed a lot in the past two decades. Many of their older shows were strange and maybe a little too adult for kids to be watching.

1 Seinfeld

Seinfeld, created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, was one of the most watched series of all time. The show chronicles the daily routines of Jerry and his friends living in New York City. The series was called by many to be “a show about nothing”, given the fact that there are rarely any on-going storylines and there are never dramatic scenes. The series is all gags and goofs while the characters talk about everyday inconveniences. Seinfeld was one of the last of its kind. Sitcoms like Seinfeld just aren’t being made today due to changes in what’s popular and what viewers want to see.
