The season is over, Bunny’s killer was found, and all seems right at the Arconia. Right? Of course not. The second season of Hulu’s hit true crime parody Only Murders in the Building wrapped up smoothly this week, with each of the leads finding peace in their lives and moving on. Charles (Steve Martin) was given a leading role in the reboot of his show Brazzos. Oliver (Martin Short) had a chance to direct a play with a big-name star (more on that later). Mabel (Selena Gomez) began to heal from the trauma in her life with the help of Alice (Cara Delevingne).
Had this been the series finale, it would have brought a sense of closure for our three leads; they all found something meaningful in their lives other than murder. Of course, we knew it wouldn’t be that simple, and the season ended with the trio implicated in yet another death. Here we go again.

The finale sets up some potential paths for the third season, which seems like it will take the story in a new direction. So what is that new direction? Here’s what we might see in season three of Only Murders in the Building.
Paul Rudd Is Returning
Marvel Studios
Obviously, there will be a new murder in the new season. This time, the deceased is famed Broadway actor Ben Glenroy (played by the eternally ageless Paul Rudd). With Rudd already confirmed to be joining the third season’s cast, we can anticipate his character will have a significant role, despite being dead. The murder of Rudd’s Glenroy was significantly different from Bunny’s and Tim Kono’s.
While they were both stabbed at their apartments in the Arconia, Glenroy collapsed and died during the opening night of Oliver’s play. He looks to have been poisoned, as blood was seen coming from his mouth after he collapsed. This means that the Only Murders in the Building team could investigate a murder outside the building. It’s a great way to expand the setting but also a betrayal of the title’s second half.

While we first meet Glenroy in the last minutes of the finale, he is no stranger to the trio. Just before his death, Charles approaches him on stage and mentions, “I know what you did.” Is there some history between Charles and Glenroy? How involved was he with the team during the year time jump from solving Bunny’s murder to the play’s opening night? All of these are questions we should ask and that should be answered in the new season. Again, despite Glenroy’s death, his storyline is far from over, and how he connects to the central trio remains to be seen.
A Murder Outside the Building?
Hulu
As mentioned above, there’s a chance that the third season may involve a murder that is not “in the building,” as Glenroy died in the play’s theater. This could mean that season three will feature a new setting, with the trio potentially investigating the theater. Generally, expanding to a new location later in a television series works well. It helps to introduce new environments and can get the characters out of their comfort zones. New settings can also bring new characters and storylines. If this were any other series, the change in scenery would be a welcome new avenue for the story.
However, the title limits where the action can take place, Only Murders in the Building (i.e., The Arconia). The “only” even demands that no murders anywhere else be investigated by the central trio. So, does this mean that the series has abandoned the rule set by the very title, and the team is expanding outside the Arconia?
In all likelihood, no. Since Glenroy has some connection to the title trio, he may also have a connection to the Arconia. The famed apartment complex has no shortage of high-profile residents. Charles and Oliver had extensive experience in show business, and celebrities like Sting and Amy Schumer lived in the building during the series’ run. It would not be out of the realm of possibility for Broadway star Ben Glenroy to have lived in the Arconia at some point. Even if he didn’t live there, maybe he has some connection to someone who did.

Remember Charles’s enigmatic line of “I know what you did.” Since the trio solely investigates crime in the Arconia, they could have uncovered something that Glenroy did in the building. Maybe he murdered someone there; who knows? Even though Glenroy’s death did not happen in the Arconia, we can say with near certainty that we have not seen the last of the titular building. Side note, maybe people should stop living there with so many murders going on.
The Trio Moving Forward
By the end of the second season, each trio member found peace in their lives. Charles returned to TV, Oliver directed a new play, and Mabel healed with Alice. Seeing these characters find some closure brought a welcome sigh of relief. At the beginning of the series, they were three strangers who all faced some personal struggle. Their love of murder podcasts united them and allowed them to move forward as a group. We see the payoff from this dynamic at the season’s end when each one seems genuinely happy about something other than murder for the first time in the series.
While it looks like they will fall back into a murder investigation in the new season, they should continue their journeys of personal development. While each has grown in their own way, their friendship has helped them with that growth. For season three to work, it needs the core trio to move forward and continue to help one another be better people.
