Several new images from director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Oppenheimer have now been released, revealing our first look at the likes of Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr., both of whom will star alongside Cillian Murphy in the biopic. Coming courtesy of Total Film, the images find Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. in particular looking very much unlike anything we have seen from the actor before. Especially when his role as the suave, goatee-sporting Tony Stark has been his most high-profile for so long. Check out the newly released images from Oppenheimer below.

Based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer will follow Cillian Murphy as the influential real-life figure J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who contributed to the Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the atomic bomb. Often credited as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the project during World War II, the real Oppenheimer quicky became conflicted and even terrified of the power that he himself helped to unleash, uttering the immortal words, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Thus, Oppenheimer is expected to center on a brilliant scientist and man battling against his own invention, detailing his moral struggle and the inner crisis he faced after seeing what the atom bomb was capable of.

Oppenheimer Finds Cillian Murphy Leading a Christopher Nolan Project for the First Time

Despite collaborating on five different projects, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Dunkirk, Oppenheimer will be the first time that Cillian Murphy has found himself in the lead role for one of the hugely successful filmmaker’s movies. “It’s the first time he’s cast me in a lead, which I’m still a bit in shock about, but I’m thrilled,” Murphy said earlier this year of landing the titular role of Oppenheimer. “It’s a huge part and a lot of work. But in my estimation, you’re working with one of the greatest living directors, so you’re in safe hands.”

Nolan will surround Murphy with one of the most impressive supporting casts in history, including A Quiet Place star Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, The Martian’s Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, and The Wonder’s Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock. If that were not already enough recognizable names, Oppenheimer will also feature the likes of Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, David Dastmalchian, Jason Clarke, Josh Peck, Tony Goldwyn, Casey Affleck, Alex Wolff, Olivia Thirlby, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, and, somehow, more.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures.
